Mike Malott got the biggest win of his career at UFC Winnipeg, stopping Gilbert Burns by third-round TKO at 2:08 in the welterweight main event.
This was the kind of fight Malott needed if he wanted to be taken seriously as more than a hometown favorite. Burns came in on a brutal skid, but he was still the veteran test, still dangerous on the mat, and still the kind of name that can expose a guy fast if the moment gets too big. Malott never let it get there.
Round 1 was mostly Malott staying patient and forcing Burns to chase. Burns fired big shots and looked for openings to close distance, but Malott’s jab, uppercut, and takedown defense kept him in control. Burns had moments, but Malott was cleaner and sharper through most of the round.
Round 2 looked even more like Malott’s fight. Burns tried to mix in kicks and quick bursts, but Malott kept touching him with the jab and stuffing the wrestling. Burns got inside a few times and landed hard punches, but he was still working harder for less. By the end of the round, Malott looked composed while Burns looked like he was already slipping behind.
The finish came in Round 3, and it was clean. Burns came out with more urgency, knowing he needed something big, but Malott stayed disciplined. He kept reading the entries, kept making Burns pay for failed shots, and then cracked him with a sharp combination that dropped him. A follow-up right hand put Burns down again, and Malott swarmed until the referee stepped in.

Mike Malott shuts down Gilbert Burns and levels up at welterweight
That is what made the result matter. Malott did not just survive the name value or squeak by on optics. He won minutes, shut down takedowns, stayed tighter on the feet, and then got Burns out of there. For a welterweight division that always needs fresh movement, this was the kind of performance that actually means something.
Burns has now dropped another fight in a brutal late-career stretch, while Malott gets the signature result that can push him into a different tier of conversation. In front of a Canadian crowd that badly needed a main-event payoff, he delivered one.
