After sitting on the sidelines waiting for a fight that never came to fruition, ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 309 for a rematch with former lightweight world champion Charles Oliveira.
The first time around, ‘Do Bronx’ escaped near-defeat in the opening round and finished the former Bellator titleholder early in the second. If he hopes to get another crack at the 155-pound crown, he’ll have to do it again inside the world’s most famous arena—Madison Square Garden.
Round 1
Oliveira opens the striking with a front kick and follows it up with a calf kick. Oliveira appears to be having some sort of issue with his right eye following an exchange. Possibly a missed eye poke, but the fight continues uninterrupted and Chandler advances with a jab. Chandler throws a calf kick that Oliveira checks. Chandler fires to the body and Oliveira shoots in for a double-leg. ‘Do Bronx’ gets the takedown and is immediately in position to cinch in a heel hook with three minutes to go in the round.
Chandler is defending as Oliveira slowly attempts to improve his position on the mat. Chandler is content to keep Oliveira from moving into a more dominant position and manages to ride out the round without taking any further damage on the mat.
Round 2
Like the first round, Oliveira gets things started with a few kicks as Chandler jabs with the left. Oliveira throws a combination and connects with a left hand that puts Chandler on the mat. Chandler pops back up but eats another nasty right hand against the fence and Chandler is on the run. Oliveira backs off and Chandler attempts to respond with an uppercut. A calf kick from Chandler lands, but ‘Do Bronx’ connects with a body kick that appears to have Chandler hurting.
Perhaps feeling some desperation, Chandler starts winning left hands and connects with a couple of them. That prompts Oliveira to shoot in for a takedown and immediately gets into full mount near the fence. Oliveira postures up and looks to land some elbows. Oliveira thinks about transitioning to an armbar but decides to reign down a few more sharp elbows—a trend that continues through the end of the round.
Round 3
Chandler opens the third with a jab and Oliveira responds with a front kick to the body before shooting for another takedown. This time, Chandler defends and stays upright. Chandler lands a kick to the body, but ‘Do Bronx’ advances and lands an uppercut against the cage. Chandler lands a strong jab that pops Oliveira’s head back. Oliveira responds with another uppercut and looks to land a flying knee.
Chandler swings big and misses. Oliveira takes advantage with a knee and then an elbow. Oliveira closes the distance, gets ahold of Chandler, and muscles him down to the mat. Oliveira immediately takes Chandler’s back and ‘Iron’ is breathing heavily. Oliveira locks in a body triangle and throws some 12-to-6 elbows from the back.
Chandler avoids being submitted, but all he can do for the remainder of the round is survive.
Round 4
Oliveira comes out aggressive, but Chandler throws a heavy left hand that connects. Chandler appears to still have plenty in the gas tank and lands another nice left, but eats a shot in return. Oliveira partially connects with a flying knee against the fence. Chandler fires away but that leaves him open for yet another successful takedown from Oliveira.
‘Do Bronx’ takes Chandler’s back again and works to get his hooks in. With less than a minute to go, Oliveira was able to cinch his arm around the neck of Chandler, but ‘Iron’ defended well and lived to fight another round.
Round 5
Chandler fires a couple of nice lefts to the body and Oliveira shoots in for a takedown. Chandler sees it coming and sidesteps to stay on his feet. Chandler is picking it up and lands a pick right hand. Oliveira appears to be hurt and Chandler swarms him. Chandler shoots for a takedown, but Chandler gets on top and starts reigning down strikes. Oliveira tries to control posutre. Chandler drops some big elbows, but Oliveira gets him into his guard. Chandler postures up again and looks to land some more elbows with three minutes to go in the fight.
Oliveira appears to be fishing for a triangle choke, but Chandler gets out of the hold and back to his feet. Oliveira looks tired as Chandler advances. Chandler connects and wobbles Oliveira. Chandler calls for ‘Do Bronx’ to fight and Oliveira shoots for another takedown. Oliveira gets him down and takes his back with little more than a minute to go. Chandler is trying to initiate a scramble and gets back up to his feet with Oliveira on his back.
Chandler flops back and then deadlifts Oliveira a second time. Chandler falls backward once again and the two fighters share a left as the final seconds on the clock run out.
Official Result: Charles Oliveira def. Michael Chandler via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-45)
