Merab Dvalishvili spent much of the year competing at a pace few champions attempt. Multiple high-level fights, repeated training camps, and the pressure of championship expectations defined his 2025 stretch.

That momentum came to a halt at UFC 323, where Dvalishvili challenged Petr Yan in a bantamweight title rematch. Despite his effort, he came up short in a unanimous decision, losing the belt and ending one of the most active runs in recent division history.

Bisping Looks Beyond Immediate Redemption

Watching the outcome, Michael Bisping focused less on rankings and more on long-term well-being. While acknowledging Dvalishvili’s accomplishments, Bisping suggested patience rather than an immediate return.

“Merab probably deserves the rematch if we’re being honest,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “Look at the body of work then yeah, he probably does, but there’s Umar Nurmagomedov out there. I would say let Yan defend for a minute. Take a break, brother. Have a little bit of time off. You’ve done incredible things.”

Emphasis on Recovery and Reset

Bisping continued by stressing how much Dvalishvili has already given to the sport. He pointed out the physical strain, financial reward, and national pride tied to the former champion’s career.

“You no doubt earned a tremendous amount of money. You’ve represented your country at the highest level, and you have put yourself through it. Have three, four, five months off. Rest on your laurels. Reap the rewards of your riches and your spoils, OK? Relax. Take a break. Let the body and the mind relax a little bit then come back and look to take your throne.”

Before the loss, Dvalishvili had not tasted defeat across fourteen consecutive fights. His run included title defenses against elite opposition such as Umar Nurmagomedov, Sean O’Malley, and Cory Sandhagen. He had also beaten Yan previously in March 2023, adding weight to the significance of the UFC 323 rematch.

Even with the setback, his résumé remains one of the strongest in the bantamweight division.

With Yan back on top, the title picture remains crowded. Nurmagomedov stands nearby, while other contenders wait for clarity. Dvalishvili’s future may depend as much on timing and recovery as on results.

For Bisping, the message is clear. Stepping away does not mean stepping backward. Taking time off could be the move that allows Dvalishvili to return refreshed and ready for another run at the belt.
