Max Holloway May Got ‘Water Poisoning,’ Brian Ortega Wants To Fight For Vacant Title ASAP

Undefeated Brian Ortega was getting ready for the biggest fight of his life against featherweight champion Max Holloway at UFC 226, but Holloway pulled out of the fight due to concussion-like symptoms.

“We heard that he was water loading, which is super dangerous,” UFC President Dana White told Kevin Iole. “When you water load, and I didn’t know this for those of you out there that might not know, either, there is such thing as water poisoning. And you can actually drink too much water and die from it.”

That sudden withdrew of Holloway left Ortega without dancing partner at UFC 226 PPV event last weekend. UFC tried to bring in Jeremy Stephens for short-notice, but Ortega willing to wait for Holloway’s return and wait for title shot.

“From what I’m getting now, they said that Max might not fight for a long time, and he might not even fight 145,” Ortega told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. ”So I told them then, make the belt vacant and then I’ll fight whoever you guys want me to fight ASAP. I’ll fight them at UFC 227 here in Staples (Center in Los Angeles) but let’s get that situated.”

Ortega earned his title shot by becoming the first man to knock-out Frankie Edgar, and he’s not ready to give up on that opportunity.

There were preliminary talks that Holloway and Ortega could square off at UFC 227 instead, but due to all the looming questions around “blessed’s’ medical situation, it seems unlikely, and Dana White also said, Holloway, isn’t fighting anytime soon.
