It’s tempting to make the comparison, but Matt Hughes isn’t Superman. Yes, they are both pretty strong, and they both spent a lot of time on a farm. But Clark Kent put on a costume and left Smallville. Matt Hughes won’t. He will always live on a farm, he will always eat the same country breakfast, and he will never wear bright-colored clothing. Because Matt Hughes is Matt Hughes. He’s not some tights-wearing goof with an identity crisis. And if you’re some big city philanthropist who has up and decided to start a ****ing charity, stay the hell out of Iowa. Because no Matt Hughes ****s have ever been given.
Proof? Matt watched a Cardinals baseball game while sitting cage-side at Ultimate Fight Night 47 in Bangor, Maine this weekend.

To appreciate what Matt was doing, keep in mind that some people fear the sport of baseball is trending towards becoming the most boring game on the planet. The pace-of-play problem has become so bad, fans are proposing radical solutions, such as expanding the strike zone. According to Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, “In just 10 years you have added 29 minutes, 11 seconds of dead time per game while scoring 13.3 percent fewer runs.”
That’s the sport Matt chose to watch on a television monitor over live mixed martial arts fighting, a sport he helped pioneer. While men were beating on each other just ten feet in front of him, he stuck his nose into a green and brown monitor and watched the Cardinals lose 9-5.
That either says something about the fights in Maine, something about baseball, or something about Matt Hughes. Yes, the Bader v. St. Preux fight was a bit of a snoozer, but I’m guessing this is one of those “Hughes gonna Hughes” deals. Whether you like it or not, a good old boy has to shoot a bobcat now and then, and he sure as hell isn’t going to miss a Cardinals game.
