UFC Head Hocho Dana White Was Adamant To Book Askren vs. Lawler Rematch It Seems He Changed His Mind
Former Bellator MMA and ONE Championship welterweight champion, Ben Askren is coming off a controversial first-round submission (bulldog choke) win over Robbie Lawler at UFC 235 after referee Herb Dean stopped the fight prematurely.
Following this Lawler asked for rematch even UFC president Dana White support his decision that this fight should happen again. On the opposite side, Askren said he’s no desire to do a Robbie rematch.
‘Funky’ flew all the way down to London to make his presence felt and said he’s looking a winner of Darren Till vs. Jorge Masvidal.
Masvidal emerged victoriously and got into a physical altercation with welterweight Edward Leons backstage, who also scored a split-decision win over Gunnar Nelson at UFC London co-main event. Many starts to speculating that UFC will let both fighters to throw down inside the Octagon.
Not so fast.
Now Dana White who’s changed his tone as he wants Askren to fight Jorge Masvidal, who’s coming off a scintillating stoppage win over Darren Till at UFC London earlier this month.
In a recent interview with UFC Unfiltered, Dana White said UFC is looking at Masvidal vs. Askren based on promotion’s ranking. White also added Edwards and Masvidal fight seems right for a personal reason, but if you see through a level of competitiveness, it’s not.
“Masvidal’s ranked No. 5 right now, Edwards is No. 10,” promotion president, Dana White, told the gang at UFC Unfiltered. “So we are working on something for Masvidal and Edwards, but not each other. We’re actually talking about Ben Askren vs. Masvidal right now.”
After acknowledging this news, Askren took to social media and encouraged Masvidal to sign the fight. (h/t BJPenn)
“Here’s the deal, [UFC President] Dana [White] came out and said this morning they’re looking to do me and [Jorge] Masvidal,” Ben Askren said in a video he posted on his social media accounts. “I heard that. I said yes last week. It didn’t take me more than 10 seconds to say, ‘Of course, Jorge. Let’s do this. You think you’re a gangster,’
“Well, now I’m starting to hear he’s getting cold feet, he doesn’t want to do it, he doesn’t want to fight because he’s scared. Jorge! Just tell the people. Are you scared? If you’re scared, I will move on to somebody else. If you’re not scared, June 8, Chicago. I’m free, you’re free, let’s do this.
“It’s really simple,” He continued. “The winner’s probably going to get a title shot, Jorge, so there’s quite a bit on the line and I think it would be in your best interest to stop being a chicken and just. Say. Yes.”

It’s funny how Dana White using UFC rankings to book future fights, as unranked Anthony Pettis made his 170-pound debut against top contender Stephen Thompson. As well on the same card, Cutis Blaydes fought low ranked Justin Willis.
Since Edwards who’s riding on seven-fight winning streak holds a solid position in the welterweight division to take on top contenders.
