This Is Not Click Bait! Italian UFC Flyweight Fighter Mara Romero Borella Can’t Compete Until 2044!

We were talking about Nick Diaz and Jon Jones like their suspensions were the end of the world. But comparing to UFC Italian Flyweight fighter Mara Romero Borella, their penalties look so tiny.

Mara Romero Borella (12-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was punished with 26 years suspension by Italian Anti-Doping Agency! She competed while she has been under prohibition. This is one of the most terrible penalties ever in the history of this sport. MMA Today was the first to report the news.

Mara Romero Borella has already been a unique case. She was charged with her former boyfriend, rugby player Filippo Maserati, for drug trafficking. Operation Finkler was conducted for two years. Thirty-one persons were rounded up alongside Borella and Maserati. They were selling and distributing cocaine and cannabis in nightclubs, bars, sports events. But Mara Romero Borella was also charged for selling drugs in her own gym!

The most of the defendants agreed to a plea deal in 2012, which included 1-4 years in prison. Mara Romero Borella is a professional athlete. Due to that, she also received 15 years of suspension by WADA-following Italian Olympic Committee. She was claimed ineligible to fight until 2029.

Yet, Borella didn’t care much. She continued competing and using Italian sports facilities. The Italian Anti-Doping Agency added another 15 years to her existing penalty. According to how the situation develops at the moment, Mara Romero Borella is ineligible to compete until 2044!

Mara Romero Borella is the best Italian female UFC fighter of all time. Borella defeated Kalindra Faria at UFC 216 on October 7, 2017, via rear-naked choke. She lost the match versus Katlyn Chookagian at UFC On Fox 27 on January 27, 2018, via unanimous decision.

But here comes the controversy. There is no rule that says UFC fighter has to respect WADA code. All eyes are pointed at the USADA now. The penalty looks really serious and controversial. What are your thoughts on this? Do you believe USADA will overturn the verdict?
