Manager: Yoel Romero Plans To Move Up To 205-Pound, Wants Daniel Cormier Title fight

UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero who’s coming off a split decision loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC 225. The five-round affair wasn’t even for Whittaker’s title because Romero missed weight by .2 pounds on his second attempt and then he missed weight against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 and become ineligible to win the title. Now he becomes the first UFC fighter to miss weight for a title fight twice.

Since that weight debacle, talks of Romero moving up to light heavyweight surfaced, and UFC president Dana White said it’s a good idea that “Soldier of God” go up in the weight division.

Now Romero’s manager, Malki Kawa, told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, that ex-title contender considering a move to light heavyweight, as well revealed he was initially offered the Alexander Gustafsson bout at UFC 227 then it was given to Volkan Oezdemir. (Via MMAMania)

“So we are talking to UFC about him moving up to light heavyweight. And I think what we’re going to propose to them, well, to be honest, they offered us the Gustafsson fight and we accepted it. But Gustafsson needed to fight in August and Yoel wanted to fight later because he has to have surgery, he broke his orbital. So there are talks for him to fight at light heavyweight,” he continued.

Kawa said he wants to pitch the idea to UFC for Romero to make a debut at light heavyweight and that against Daniel Cormier, who currently hold two division belts.

“So I was looking at his record and looking at some of the people he’s beat, and I don’t know what the fans will think about Yoel Romero and Daniel Cormier title fight since Daniel wants big fights and I think that would be the biggest fight to make,” proclaimed Malki.

Due to his weight cut disaster, Romero was unsuccessful in winning the title, but his resume holds an impressive record, that includes a knock-out wins over Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, and Lyoto Machida. Kawa feels those wins are enough to make UFC convince in accepting the proposal.

“When I look at this, and I don’t know how UFC would feel but Yoel Romero has beaten on his record five champions. Three UFC and two Strikeforce champions. He’s a monster in the Octagon,” he said.

“His fights with Robert Whittaker were razor thin and some people thought he won the second fight and he’s knocked out UFC champions. He is one of the best fighters in the UFC without a belt. He doesn’t have a fight and Cormier wants to fight somebody, maybe they will let us take that fight.”

Daniel Cormier wants two fights before hanging his gloves for good, already teasing a potential return at light-heavyweight for a title defense against Shogun Rua, off course Rua has to get past Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night 134. Cormier wants to end his career with a heavyweight showdown with Brock Lesnar.

If Rua doesn’t work out, Romero is more than willing to fight for the 205-pound title until WWE star gets his USADA suspension finished.
