After years of climbing the ranks, Mackenzie Dern has finally secured the title she long pursued. In a grueling co-main event at UFC 321, Dern defeated Virna Jandiroba by unanimous decision to become the new strawweight champion, with scores of 48–47, 48–47, and 49–46.
“It feels amazing,” Dern said, holding back tears. “I can’t believe this. It wasn’t the fight I expected, I thought it was going to be a little bit easier. I think I did a lot of damage on the ground. I think it was enough.”
The matchup showcased both athletes’ technical depth—Jandiroba leaning on her wrestling and grappling base, while Dern mixed her striking with high-level jiu-jitsu transitions to stay in control.
Early Rounds: Technical Chess and Power Exchanges
From the opening bell, Dern established control of the striking range. She snapped sharp jabs and hard leg kicks that caught Jandiroba off guard. Jandiroba answered by diving for takedowns, managing to get Dern down, but the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace quickly worked her way back to her feet.
Dern’s composure showed through as she began to find rhythm with crisp boxing combinations, forcing Jandiroba to rely more heavily on her wrestling. Each time Jandiroba scored a takedown, Dern neutralized her momentum from guard, keeping the exchanges relatively even.
As the second and third rounds unfolded, Jandiroba increased pressure and succeeded in chaining multiple takedowns. Still, Dern’s activity from the bottom—elbows, strikes, and movement—kept her ahead on the scorecards.
Whenever the fight returned to striking distance, Dern’s accuracy stood out. She repeatedly landed heavy punches that forced Jandiroba to rethink her approach. Her defensive grappling, once considered a liability in previous bouts, looked more polished and composed.
Championship Rounds: Heart Over Technique
By the fourth round, both fighters showed visible swelling under their eyes—a testament to how physically draining the match had become. Jandiroba’s combinations started to connect, but Dern answered with her own takedown attempt, briefly controlling from top position before Jandiroba reversed.
The final five minutes saw nonstop grappling exchanges. Jandiroba pinned Dern to the cage, throwing elbows and short punches. When they separated, she managed another takedown, only for Dern to retaliate from her back with clean, snapping strikes.
Though neither fighter came close to a finish, Dern’s volume and offensive intent swayed the judges in her favor.

From her UFC debut, Dern was labeled a prodigy—a world-class grappler destined for gold. Now, that promise has become reality.
Her win at UFC 321 not only crowns her as the strawweight queen but also signals her evolution from submission specialist to complete mixed martial artist.
The division, long dominated by names like Zhang Weili and Rose Namajunas, now has a new face on the throne—one who earned every bit of it through resilience, pressure, and persistence.
