Gegard Mousasi Secures A Split Decision Win Over The Former UFC Champ Lyoto Machida!

Bellator 228 is going down live now (Saturday, September 28, 2019) from inside The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The co-main event of the evening brings the Middleweight clash of two former UFC stars. The ex-205-pound UFC champion and legendary Karateka Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida squares off against the former Bellator 185-pound king Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi.

The two already fought at UFC Fight Night 36, on February 15, 2014, where Lyoto Machida secured a unanimous decision win after five rounds. Can Mousasi avenge the loss?

Black trunks, blue gloves for Mousasi; red gloves and green trunks for Machida. The ref is Mike Beltran.

Round 1

Fighters touch gloves. Lyoto advances, but Mousasi wisely circles and moves to the right. Mousasi kicks to the knee, Machida eats a right hand, but no significant damage.

Leg kick Lyoto, Mousasi fires back with a combo. Machida attempts a knee strike, but Gegard counters him. Body kick Lyoto but Mousasi clips him again with a punch. Lyoto attacks with a head kick, blocked, but he connects with a straight left punch. Leg kick Gegard, close round, but let’s say 10-9 Gegard.

Round 2

Mousasi again attacks foe’s legs with a kick, both fighters are slow-paced, waiting for counter shots. Gegard flurries with a punch combo but Lyoto circles. Inside leg kick Gegard, Machida switches stance. Left kick to the body Lyoto.

Mousasi goes to the legs, but Lyoto lands another body blow and dodges the incoming blow. Straight left Machida, body kick, Mousasi counters with a big right hand, striking exchange. 10-9 Machida but razor-close round.

Round 3

Machida uses kicks over and over, Mousasi counters with hands. Mousasi wobbles him with a left hook. Machida fires back, Mousasi delivers two punches in return. Mousasi tags Machida and drops him, then ends up in the top position.

Machida moves against the fence, trapping Mousasi’s hand with a guillotine choke. Mousasi survives until the end of the round, I am unsure who won this frame.

Final Result: Judges scored 30-27 Mousasi, 29-28 Machida, and 29-28 Mousasi, split decision win for Mousasi

Check the highlights:

Lyoto Machida drops to 26-9 MMA, 2-1 BMMA, Gegard Mousasi improves the score to 45-8-2 MMA, 4-1 BMMA.
