When Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward first faced each other, I was eleven years old at the time. My brain wasn’t fully developed. When I first saw this fight, my brain couldn’t handle what my eyes were seeing. I knew exactly what was going on, I just couldn’t even begin to comprehend how legendary that fight was. Even after watching it now after all these years later, I still can’t. I watch it and my brain almost shuts off, I turn into a primate of sorts. Unable to do the things us humans take for granted. Such as critical thinking, as I watch this fight, I can only make grunts and sentences that aren’t coherent in the least bit.
I could sit here and talk about the fight, talk about round 9 which was dubbed as “the round of the century.” But I can’t, I could try, but this fight is something that needs to be witnessed, Bert Sugar (R.I.P.) could write a 100 page essay on the fight and it still wouldn’t do it justice. It’s simply a moment in history which can’t be described.
HBO is airing a special on this very moment in history Saturday night as midnight, do yourself a favor and watch it.
