Khamzat Chimaev coach Andreas Michael has dismissed the idea of Nate Diaz being an easy matchup.

The rising “Borz” is set to collide with one of the biggest superstars in the UFC when he takes on Diaz in the headlining bout for UFC 279. When the promotion announced the fight, there were plenty of reactions calling it an unfair pairing for the Stockton native.

Khamzat Chimaev coach dismisses notion of Nate Diaz being an easy fight

In an interview with Submission Radio, coach Michael shared his reaction to hearing the fight announcement.

“I was like, yes! It’s a good fight for us. I wish we knew a little bit earlier than a five weeks’ notice for a five-round fight. But this guy is one of the biggest welterweights in the division, like Alex is one of the biggest light heavyweights in the division. It takes a little bit of time to do stuff but at the end of the day, done deal.”

Michael revealed what he likes about the fight

When asked about Chimaev’s preparations for the outing, Michael revealed what he likes about the fight.

“Well, he’s not out of shape. It’s just that we need time to prepare for the right camp, he’s always in shape but we gotta make a battle plan and practice it.

“Conditioning is the last thing that I’m worried about. What we have to do is just apply the tactical side of it. Five weeks is a little bit short but it’s done before. If anyone else can do it, we can do it. Khamzat’s fought on a week’s notice, Khamzat’s fought two fights in one week.

“It’s a perfect fight for us because we’re fighting a named opponent, a good opponent, and that’s what we want. We want to fight the best. As they say, if you’re going to put yourself at risk, then better to put yourself at risk against the best. I’d like for us to fight against the best because to be the best, you have to beat the best.”

Michael doesn’t believe Diaz is being punished

While some may see this as a hitjob on Diaz by the UFC, Michael shut down all similar talks.

“It’s bullsh*t, it’s pure bullsh*t. Nate Diaz has fought and given Leon Edwards a run for his money. Alright, Leon Edwards was winning every round but he gave Leon Edwards a tough fight. He’s by no means an easy opponent for us. Nate Diaz is probably going to make money.”

“By no means is it not beneficial for Nate because for him to accept this fight you can understand that he got paid or is getting paid.”
