  • Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will finally face Leon Edwards once again
  • “The Nigerian Nightmare” is coming off a long break while “Rocky” has gone unbeaten since their first fight

After being halted by a hand injury, reigning UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will now make his highly-anticipated return. He is set to take on former rival Leon Edwards in a pulsating rematch at UFC 278 on August 20. It was confirmed by the promotion that Usman and Edwards would be paired up during the coverage of UFC 275 in Singapore.

The return of the King

The UFC’s pound-for-pound king has not fought since November last year when he beat Colby Covington in their rematch at UFC 268. Usman is now out to prove that his layoff will not derail him as he aims to complete his sixth successful UFC title defense against Edwards, whom he already thumped via unanimous decision in 2015.

All about revenge

Edwards has long been eyeing a crack at the UFC gold, having been undefeated since his 2015 defeat to Usman. That is of course barring the no contest against Belal Muhammad at UFC Fight Night 187. The last time he won was last year at UFC 263, when he beat Stockton native Nate Diaz by unanimous decision.

With Conor McGregor expressing his desire to jump straight to welterweight title contention, rumors swirled that Edwards was offered “step-aside” money to make way for “The Notorious.” However, none of that seems to matter for “Rocky” anymore as he is clearly all about avenging his loss and becoming the new king of the 170-pound division.

The UFC 278 event will take place on August 20 from inside the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
