Welterweight Champ Talks Brawl With Covington

Newly crowned UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman has quite the challenger in front of him. Former interim champion, Colby Covington should be next up to face the champ.

Kamaru Usman talked about this potential match with Ariel Helwani. Following a dominate victory over Tyron Woodley, to win the belt, Usman had an altercation with Covington. Usman and his manager went back and forth with Covington in a buffet line. Usman told his side of the story.

“[Ali Abdelaziz] smacked the dog s–t out of colby.”

Usman went on to berate Covington, calling him out for “hiding behind an elderly woman.” He continued on to say that Colby has ducked him on 5 separate occasions. Not only that, but he called Colby entitled, asking for handouts. Usman then questioned Covington’s “Make America Great Again” shtick.

“you’re not an american man. i’m american. i’m more american than you. so do all that talk, and do everything you want to do, but i’m american…i’m trying to unite, he’s trying to divide.”

Kamaru Usman would not commit to a bout with Colby being next for a title shot. He cited several recent performances in the 170lb division. Usman says he has options. He then went on to say that if Colby wants the shot, he has to “beg me.”

Whether its Colby Covington, Ben Askren, or even Anthony Pettis; the top of the Welterweight division is incredibly interesting right now. However, logically speaking, Colby should have fought for the belt already. A bout with Kamaru Usman, and Colby Covington could potentially be big.
