Jose Montanha did not need a long feeling-out process to crash the UFC heavyweight party. The Brazilian newcomer made Louie Sutherland tap to a rear-naked choke at 1:50 of Round 1 at UFC Vegas 120, turning a rough first minute into a fast debut win at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Sutherland came in with some shine after dragging Tai Tuivasa into another ugly night at UFC Perth, but Montanha flipped the script fast. He fought off the early wrestling attempt, put Sutherland on his back, climbed into the choke, and forced the quick tap before the big men had even worked up a proper sweat.

Montanha Gets Emotional After UFC Debut Win
Montanha moved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the UFC with the win, and the finish was exactly the kind of debut heavyweight prospects dream about. No 15-minute slog, no weird scorecards, no heavyweight gas-tank horror show. Just an early scramble, a back take, and a choke that shut the door.
After the fight, Montanha spoke through an interpreter with Daniel Cormier and made it clear this was not just another Saturday night at the Apex. “I wanted to quit so many times,” Montanha said. “I didn’t take the mourning of my father too well. I’m very happy to be here and get this win.”
That gave the win some real weight without turning the whole thing into a sob story. Montanha entered the UFC with one career loss, a dangerous grappling base, and a heavyweight frame that clearly is not here to play nice. Sutherland dropped to 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the UFC, a brutal turn after he had just used his size and wrestling to beat Tuivasa earlier this year.
The timing matters for the division, too. UFC heavyweight has been getting fresh bodies pushed into the lineup, from prospects to comeback stories, and Montanha just made sure his name gets a harder look while Sutherland now has to rebuild from a fast reversal after Tai Tuivasa had already put him in the heavyweight conversation earlier this year. One quick choke does not make a contender, but it does buy him another interesting booking, and after UFC Vegas 120, that is exactly what he earned.
