Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier did not land in the same place on Dan Hooker vs. Salahdine Parnasse. The UFC on Paramount+ preview panel broke down Saturday's UFC Paris main event, and the debate gave Hooker a real upset case while still treating Parnasse like a dangerous newcomer. It adds another layer to a fight week where Hooker already called Parnasse's debut a make-or-break spot.

The source video from UFC on Paramount+ is below.

The first part of the discussion centered on whether Hooker can keep the bout long and punish level changes. One panelist pointed directly to Hooker's knees and guillotine as reasons Parnasse cannot get lazy when he attacks.

“I mean, Dan does have good great knees, obviously. He's showed it time and time again. If he stays long, be smart, but Masvidal was telling me before the show, he was like, this French guy can do it all.”

“If he does make one mistake, it's the same mistake that Umar makes. He dips his head to the inside to take shots as a southpaw. And Dan Hooker's not that guy to do it because I will I go back to what Dustin was saying about them knees. If he dips his head a little bit, Dan Hooker's going to catch him with a knee.”

That was not the only Hooker argument. The panel also noted that Hooker's submission defense weapon can shape the wrestling exchanges.

“He doesn't telegraph him. He shoots them straight up. His hips are super flexible. He can probably knee himself in the face. Like he's really got good dexterity. And yeah, don't dip your head. Also, Dan has a great guillotine.”

Parnasse Still Drew The Stronger Technical Read

Parnasse is 23-2 and arrives with plenty of hype, but this was not framed as a soft landing. The same panel that gave Hooker upset paths also repeatedly came back to Parnasse's skill set, matching the confidence Parnasse showed when he promised a master class against Hooker.

“This dude can box, too, man. This dude can box. Like he can do it all.”

“More technical than Hooker, I think, in all aspects.”

“I think he gets caught in the dog fight.”

The betting discussion made the split obvious. Parnasse was listed as a heavy favorite during the segment, but Hooker's experience and danger kept Poirier from writing him off.

“Saladin.”

“I like to bet on Hooker on that one just because of like just his his danger factor, man.”

“His experience, his danger factor. Like this is a big spot for him.”

Hooker enters the fight after a rough stretch, but the respect from the panel was obvious. Poirier has fresh reason to know what Hooker brings over five rounds after their rewatch of the 2020 war, and Masvidal's read gave Parnasse credit as more than just another striker. UFC Paris now gets a main event where the favorite looks dangerous everywhere, and the underdog still has enough weapons to make one mistake matter.
