Jorge Masvidal spoke out in defense of UFC President Dana White after Ronda Rousey openly criticized the promotion. Speaking on his Death Row MMA YouTube channel, Masvidal addressed the former UFC champion’s remarks and questioned her reasoning.
“Her eyes, bro,” Masvidal said after reviewing Rousey’s interview. “Her nose, her teeth like what type of demonology is she on, bro? This is spooky, man. I know Ronda was a hell of a fighter at one point but she looks spooky, I seen that interview and I was spooked out. I don’t know what’s going on with Ronda. But Ronda’s never been the best on the mic to tell you the truth. She just says things that are weird. Her taking shots at Dana, it’s like, Dana made you. Dana literally hand-walked you into the league and opened a lot of doors for you.”
Masvidal stressed that Rousey owes a lot to the UFC and White for her career success.
Rousey vs Carano: Will Nostalgia Carry the Fight?
Masvidal also discussed Rousey’s upcoming fight against Gina Carano, set for May 16 on Netflix. He questioned whether the matchup would capture the audience’s interest as much as some expect.
“I know she’s the one that did the accolades and fought, got in that cage and kept what she killed,” Masvidal said. “But she’s just going at the UFC stuff so hard. For her to say things like the UFC is not making fights people want to make but her fight is the one people want to see? I guess she’ll prove us all wrong when we see the numbers come back from Netflix. But I don’t think too many guys are excited about two chicks who are no longer in their prime fighting… I love Gina Carano, I think she’s a hell of a star who opened up the doors for people like Ronda and Amanda Nunes. She was like the first superstar for women so I always have nothing but respect and love for Gina. Then Ronda obviously blew it out the gate, took the UFC into another stratosphere as far as popularity goes and all that. But I think they’re tooting their own horn a little bit too much… This is like ten years later and people don’t really care for that too much… We’re going to see if I’m right or wrong, I’m not trying to hate on that fight at all because I’m sure a lot of people are going to tune in.”
Masvidal made it clear that he believes fighters, including Rousey, should recognize the role the UFC played in their careers. He noted her success and influence in popularizing women’s MMA but emphasized gratitude toward the promotion.
