A big heavyweight fight may be on the horizon.

Miocic Offered Fight Against Jones

According to MMA Junkie, Stipe Miocic has been offered an interim title fight with Jon Jones. While the matchup is all but signed, it is targeted to take place at UFC 276 on July 2nd in Las Vegas.

Of course, the offer is the easy part. The agreement? Not so much. We’ll have to see if the former champions signed the dotted line, in time.

It Makes Sense

Dana White would even shine some light on the matchup in a recent interview. The UFC President thinks a fight between Jon Jones & Stipe Miocic simply ‘makes sense’ for the heavyweight division at the moment.

“I was just telling somebody the other day, our lineup for this summer is incredible,” White told TMZ. “So I’m hoping Jon Jones is going to be part of that lineup this summer… Stipe makes sense.”

This might be the fight to make at heavyweight due to UFC Champion Francis Ngannou out of the equation. Ngannou will likely be sidelined for the rest of 2022, after a recent knee surgery. This injury would go into and follow his successful title defense against Cyril Gane at UFC 270.

With Ngannou unable to defend his title, a battle between ‘Bones’ and Cleveland’s finest may be next.

History

Jones last fought in 2020, where he defeated Dominick Reyes via a razor-close decision at UFC 247. He hasn’t fought since then, relinquishing his light heavyweight title in pursuit of heavyweight gold.

Miocic is coming off a brutal KO loss to Ngannou at UFC 260. The firefighter was looking to secure an immediate rematch with ‘The Predator’ but hasn’t been able to get the opportunity. An interim title fight is just what he needs and would guarantee a shot against Ngannou.
