Jon Jones, former UFC heavyweight champion, faces a new legal challenge as he steps away from mixed martial arts. Court records show he was charged on June 17, 2025, with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with no serious injuries or deaths reported. The incident occurred on February 24, 2025, and Jones is set for a bond arraignment on July 24.

The charge stems from a car crash where a woman, found intoxicated and partially undressed in the passenger seat, told police Jones drove the vehicle and fled. Jones denied the claim, stating the woman was already drunk when she left his home.

Jon Jones’ career, though exceptional, has been overshadowed by legal troubles. In 2012, he faced a DUI charge after crashing his Bentley. In 2015, a hit-and-run involving a pregnant woman led to his light heavyweight title being stripped and 18 months probation.

In 2020, he was charged with DWI and firearm misuse, followed by a 2021 domestic violence arrest in Las Vegas.

In March 2024, Jones was accused of threatening a drug-testing agent at his home. These incidents have sparked debates about his behavior outside the Octagon, contrasting his unmatched skill inside it.

On June 22, Jones addressed the charge on social media, stating, “Media can get it wrong without all facts. Don’t believe everything online.” His attorney, Christopher Dodd, called the charge unexpected, though specific objections were not shared.

Details of the February Incident

According to the Albuquerque Journal, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on February 24. A woman in one car showed heavy intoxication and lacked clothing from the waist down. She claimed Jones was driving and ran off after the crash.

The woman told police she consumed alcohol and psilocybin mushrooms at Jones’ home before the incident. She recalled needing to change clothes but blacked out, waking up at the accident site. She insisted Jones was the last person driving her car. Via MMAFighitng

Police reports state she called Jones, and the person answering, believed to be him, sounded intoxicated and made threatening remarks, suggesting he could employ “lethal force” through others. Jones told police the woman contacted him after the crash, and he questioned the officer’s legitimacy due to their tone. He reportedly called her 13 times and sent multiple texts between the crash and the next day.

Jones announced his retirement on June 21, 2025, prompting questions about whether the legal issue influenced his decision to step away from UFC. UFC CEO Dana White revealed Jones declined a fight against interim champion Tom Aspinall, choosing to retire instead. Jones stated, “I’m officially retiring from UFC after much reflection.”

Jones leaves MMA with a 28-1 record (1 no-contest), holding records as the youngest UFC champion at age 23 and defending the light heavyweight title 11 times across two reigns. He won the heavyweight title in 2023 against Ciryl Gane and defended it against Stipe Miocic in 2024. His victories include legends like Daniel Cormier, Rampage Jackson, and Lyoto Machida.

Despite controversies, Jones was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Fight Wing in 2021 for his 2013 bout with Alexander Gustafsson. His retirement elevates Aspinall to undisputed heavyweight champion. Jones hinted at future endeavors, saying he aims to “inspire others through new paths.”

The misdemeanor charge carries potential fines or up to seven days in jail, though Jones’ history suggests he may avoid severe penalties. His July court appearance will clarify the case’s outcome.

The timing of the charge and his retirement has intensified scrutiny on Jones’ legacy. His dominance in the Octagon remains unmatched, but his off-cage challenges continue to follow him. Fans and critics await whether he’ll address the allegations further or focus on his post-MMA journey, which he described as a “new chapter to make a positive impact.”
