Jon Jones, former UFC heavyweight champion, had two misdemeanor charges dropped on September 2, 2025, related to a February 2025 car accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The charges, leaving the scene of an accident and using a telephone to intimidate, stemmed from a woman’s claim that Jones was driving her vehicle during a crash. His attorney, Christopher Dodd, provided phone records proving Jones was not present, leading the state to dismiss the case. The ordeal raised concerns about police conduct, with Dodd calling it a false accusation to avoid a DWI charge.

Charges Dismissed with Evidence

The State of New Mexico dismissed the case against Jones.

“Nolle Prosequi comes now, the State of New Mexico and hereby dismisses this matter,” the state announced. “After further investigation, the State has reason to believe the defendant’s alibi defense is credible. The State therefore dismisses this matter.”

Jones’ attorney celebrated the outcome.

“We have been fully vindicated,” Dodd said. “From the very beginning, we explained that a woman made a false allegation against Jon in an effort to avoid being arrested for DWI, and unfortunately, the police accepted that claim without properly weighing the facts.”

Dodd highlighted key evidence.

“Once the relevant documents were finally disclosed by the police department, Jon’s cell phone records made it undeniably clear that he was nowhere near the scene of the crash.”

He expressed frustration.

“At the same time, it is deeply troubling that such critical evidence was disregarded, forcing Jon to endure this ordeal unnecessarily. Our investigation into how this occurred remains ongoing.”

Details of the Allegation

The charges arose from a February 24, 2025, two-vehicle crash in Albuquerque. A woman, found in the passenger seat and showing signs of intoxication, claimed Jones drove her car and fled on foot. She called Jones, and police noted the man on the phone seemed intoxicated and made threatening remarks.

Jones denied being at the scene.

“Jon was not driving that night; he wasn’t in the car,” Dodd said. “It appears that an intoxicated woman used a false allegation against Jon to avoid being arrested for DWI, and the police fell for it.”

Dodd criticized police actions.

“Based on the criminal complaint, it looks like they went so far as to seek a warrant for Jon’s cell phone records while conducting a misdemeanor traffic investigation. I have never heard of such a thing. It is truly unbelievable that the police would waste this amount of resources on such a case.”

He questioned their motives.

“The only thing I can think of is that the police were targeting Jon for improper purposes. We will get to the bottom of it and make sure that this baseless case is dismissed.” via MMAFighting

Jones has faced multiple legal issues. In 2015, he was charged with a felony for a hit-and-run in Albuquerque, injuring a pregnant woman. He pleaded guilty, received 18 months’ probation, and was stripped of his light heavyweight title. In 2012, he was arrested for DWI after crashing his Bentley in New York, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor. In 2021, Jones was charged with misdemeanor battery domestic violence in Las Vegas, agreeing to anger management and restitution. In 2024, he faced misdemeanor charges for assault and interference with communication after an altercation with a drug-testing agent, resolved with anger management classes.

Jones retired in June 2025 but hinted at a return for a 2026 White House UFC event.
