Ariel Helwani revealed on the Impaulsive podcast that Jon Jones, widely regarded as MMA’s greatest fighter, turned down a massive $30 million UFC offer to face interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. Helwani called it a “calculated decision,” suggesting Jones avoided the fight by setting a high price he thought the UFC wouldn’t meet. Despite briefly retiring in June 2025, Jones is back in the UFC anti-doping pool, aiming for a 2026 White House event.
Jones’ rejection of Aspinall fight
Helwani shared details on Impaulsive, saying:
“I think he didn’t want to fight him. I think it was a calculated decision on his part.”
He claimed Jones requested $30 million, over three times the UFC’s previous record payday of $8 million earned by Brock Lesnar against Mark Hunt in 2016.
“He gave the UFC a number. I believe it’s in the $30 million range for this fight. And by the way, I think he deserves it,” Helwani said. “He didn’t think they would come up with the number, and they did. I believe Saudi Arabia was involved. The big dogs were involved. He said yes, and then two days later he said, ‘Nah, on second thought, I’m out.’”
Helwani suggested Jones hoped the UFC’s refusal would let him say:
“Hey guys, I tried.”

Chael Sonnen, on his YouTube channel on June 7, 2025, disputed the claim, saying, “I don’t believe Jon Jones turned it down. My sources say he hasn’t turned that fight down.” The $30 million was nearly five times Jones’ $6.29 million purse for his November 2024 win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, highlighting the offer’s magnitude. Luke Thomas, on his podcast on August 14, 2025, backed Helwani, stating, “If Ariel Helwani reports something, that’s the reality.”
Jon Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) became the youngest UFC champion at 23, winning the light heavyweight title against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in 2011. He defended it a record 14 times against fighters like Daniel Cormier, Rashad Evans, and Lyoto Machida. In 2023, he moved to heavyweight, submitting Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 to claim the title. He defended it with a third-round TKO over Miocic at UFC 309. Jones vacated the title in June 2025 to focus on personal matters, elevating Aspinall to undisputed champion.
Jones’ career has faced significant hurdles. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to a DUI after crashing his Bentley in New York. In 2015, he lost his light heavyweight title after a hit-and-run in Albuquerque involving a pregnant woman, receiving 18 months of probation. A 2016 failed drug test for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) led to a one-year suspension, and his 2017 win over Cormier was overturned due to a positive test for Turinabol, though Jones argued it would’ve been legal under 2019 USADA rules. In 2018, a PED test forced his fight with Alexander Gustafsson to relocate to Los Angeles. In 2020, he pleaded guilty to DWI in Albuquerque, receiving house arrest. In 2021, he faced a domestic battery charge in Las Vegas, later dropped, and pleaded no contest to tampering with a police vehicle, accepting a fine and anger management.
Jones also faces ongoing legal issues. From a March 30, 2024, incident with Drug Free Sport International tester Crystal Martinez, who alleged he threatened her and took her phone, Jones faces charges of assault and interference with communications, with a bench trial set for September 2, 2025. A February 2025 car crash led to charges of leaving the scene and using a telephone to threaten, also set for trial on September 2, 2025, though an earlier hit-and-run charge was dismissed.
Jones’ avoidance of Aspinall echoes past decisions. Helwani noted on Impaulsive that Jones used a similar tactic with Francis Ngannou, asking for a high sum the UFC wouldn’t meet, allowing Jones to fight Gane after Ngannou left in 2023.
Jones responded on X, saying, “I heard the comments made at last night’s press conference. I’m still in the UFC’s drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train.”
