- Jon Jones is down to fight Alex Pereira for the BMF title
- “Bones” explained why he isn’t going to fight Tom Aspinall for a unification bout
Jon Jones is interested in taking on Alex Pereira for the BMF title but doesn’t feel the need to have a unification bout with interim champion Tom Aspinall.
A BMF title bout with Alex sounds good
Speaking to Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter, “Bones” made it clear to everybody that he would like to vacate his title after UFC 309 as much as possible. However, Jones said a BMF title fight with Pereira sounds interesting.
“It’d be cool to fight over the heavyweight championship but I would also willingly give up the heavyweight championship. I walked away from the light heavyweight championship. I’d love to walk away from this one as well on top, on (my) own terms, good head on your shoulders, making lots of money,” Jones said. “Fighting Pereira for the ‘BMF’ belt, that would be cool.”
“We both have two belts in two weight classes and the night we fought we’d both be fighting for our third belt, which would be the ‘BMF.’ How cool would that be,” he added.

Jones doesn’t see the relevance of the interim belt
As for a possible heavyweight title unification bout with Aspinall, Jones boldly explained that the interim belt was just put in there but it wasn’t really necessary. That said, “Bones” is not keen on the idea of unifying the belts with a showdown with Aspinall.
“The interim championship shouldn’t have been there in the first place. The only reason why there was an interim championship fight was because I got hurt and they needed to keep the importance of that Madison Square Garden event. But Sergei and Aspinall shouldn’t have been fighting for an interim title in the first place. They should have just been a replacement fight. Just a main event fight. I think making it an interim fight was premature. Now you have a bunch of confused people,” Jones explained.
“When you have a dominant champion that’s been around as long as I have, there is no reason to put an interim championship out there,” he continued.
Jon Jones clarifies that the heavyweight title would not necessarily have to be at stake if he were to fight Alex Pereira and he has another belt in mind.

Jones will not only be looking to defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 but also be hoping to cement his legacy as the rightful MMA GOAT. On the other hand, Miocic will try and reclaim his throne and prove that he is the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time.
Pereira, meanwhile, has already expressed his desire to face Jones on more than one occasion and would be glad to move up to heavyweight.
