John McCarthy Criticized UFC’s “Stupid Reebok Uniform”

Bellator Commentator John McCarthy: “I Love The Fact Lyoto Machida Came Out Wearing Karate Gi Instead Of Stupid Reebok Uniform”

Ah, the entrance! The walk towards the Octagon is maybe even the most entertaining part of the whole spectacle. The unusual clothing style is a great way for a fighter to get attention.

But UFC’s outfitting deal with Reebok killed the liberality and creativity! It was widely criticized by many fans, fighters, even the commentators. It doesn’t allow the fighter to chase more lucrative sponsorship, nor gives him a chance to wear a custom-designed outfit.

Luckily, that is not the case with Bellator MMA, where the veteran referee John McCarthy works as a commentator. “Big” John stated he was very pleased to look Lyoto Machida walking out in his traditional Karate gi.

Bellator commentator John McCarthy just said this on the broadcast re: Machida: “I love the fact that he comes out wearing that karate gi instead of some stupid Reebok uniform.”

Let’s remember, Lyoto Machida was always wearing a traditional Karate gi before the deal between Reebok and UFC was signed. Anderson Silva can’t walk out in his original yellow shorts anymore. Mauricio Rua can forget about his well-known “Bad Boy” outfit.

During the last few years, UFC’s deal with Reebok is the reason many UFC fighters moved to Bellator MMA. For example, Rory MacDonald thinks the agreement between UFC and Reebok was a “bad and disrespectful move”. (h/t BJPenn.com)

“I just think the UFC went about it the wrong way,” former UFC welterweight title challenger Rory MacDonald said of the Reebok deal on the MMA Hour, shortly after moving to Bellator. “They didn’t really think of the fighters, I don’t think, even though I think they’re trying to make it out like they were. There was no discussion. It was just, okay, this is happening and deal with it, kind of thing. And that’s not very respectful. I don’t think that was a very good move.”

Do you support John McCarthy? Do you think Reebok deal was one of the worst moves in the history of UFC?
