- John McCarthy weighed in on the potential Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira fight
- Big John thinks drama will not be significant when the pair faces each other
Long-time welterweight contender Stephen Thompson is looking to end his skid and is now being tipped to face Michel Pereira. The two are complete opposites as “Wonderboy” isn’t really known for bizarre narratives during fights, while Pereira, meanwhile, has been welcoming drama with open arms.
No drama, just pure fight
Sharing his thoughts on the subject, John McCarthy said that if ever, drama might not be hyping the fight between the two but at the end of the day, it would still be a “fantastic” fight, especially on the feet.
“I think that’s a fantastic fight,” McCarthy said on his Weighing In podcast. “I think that’s a fight that I would love to see I think you know Michael… he’s an athlete and he’s all over the place but as he has fought higher competition, as he has fought better fighters, a lot of the ridiculous stuff has gone out, he’s put it in the back, he doesn’t pull those things up because they waste energy, that doesn’t help him win the fight, you wouldn’t be able to do those things against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, but as far as the stand up fight I would love to watch.”

Makes the most sense
Big John further stressed that there are talks about Thompson vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov, but as far as entertaining fight goes, Pereira is the guy.
“I think that would be a great fight, a great matchup and you know and they were talking about putting Wonderboy against Rakhmonov, I think this is a much more interesting fight to watch,” he pointed out.
Thompson has not tasted a win since 2020, while Pereira had just broke into the top 15 of the 170-pound division following his back-to-back wins this year. Indeed, the match makes sense but let’s just wait and see if anything will progress.
