Joe Son has just been sentenced to life in prison

Two years ago, I felt inspired to write my first article and submit it to MiddleEasy, as it appeared to be the only appropriate outlet. The article was about UFC & Pride veteran Joe Son facing up to 275 years in prison for the torture & gang rape of a woman. Zeus liked my article and insisted I should write another one. This kept happening until I was somehow coerced into becoming MiddleEasy’s second writer. Two years later, the story of Joe Son comes full circle and this article concludes the Joe Son saga (like a Hollywood sequel, except without the budget or tacky red carpet).

To recap the entire story…Joe Son was already in custody for an unrelated vandalism charge (to which he pleaded guilty) and was asked for a DNA sample when he violated his parole. After running tests on his ‘baby batter’, investigators somehow linked him as being one of several suspects who blindfolded a woman, sodomized, pistol-whipped and raped before cutting her loose naked somewhere in the woods nearly 20 years ago.

Most convicted criminals have the book thrown at them. Joe Son had the entire library. Here’s a breakdown:

  • 5 felony counts of rape
  • 2 felony counts of forcible sodomy
  • 2 felony counts of in concert by force (we don’t even know what that means)
  • 7 felony counts of forcible oral copulation
  • 1 felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, since the crime happened so many years ago, the statue of limitations had expired for some of the charges; but two weeks ago, Joe Son was convicted of felony torture; and yesterday he was sentenced to life in prison.

For those that didn’t know Joe Son prior to his role in Austin Powers, or this is the first time you’re reading about him… Joe Son was an innovator. After watching his buddy Kimo Leopoldo come just short of a win over Royce Gracie back in UFC 3, he dug deep into his Chi and created “Joe Son Do” – which was a technique designed specifically to defeat Gracie Jujitsu (and all other fighting styles). Unfortunately, he became the only known practitioner of Joe Son Do and left the MMA world with a perfect 0-4 record.

Since this is the last we’ll probably ever hear of Joe Son (and the entire Joe Son Do discipline), it seems fitting that MiddleEasy ends with a lasting memory of Joe Son getting repeatedly struck to the groin by Keith Hackney at UFC 4. [Source]
