Joe Rogan is not in favor of how the UFC’s current weight-cutting policies and mentioned Islam Makhachev to prove his point.

Joe wants weight-cutting out of the UFC

Speaking on his JRE podcast, the UFC commentator shared his profound thoughts on weight-cutting. According to Rogan, the UFC should overhaul its weight-cutting regulations and begin letting fighters fight in their natural weight.

“I think weight-cutting should be eliminated. I said this to Ari Emanuel [CEO of Endeavor] when they first bought the UFC. I said, ‘Listen man, you know what you should do? Get rid of weight-cutting, just stop it. Look, If you can randomly test people for drugs, you can randomly test their weight. Show up with a scale, say. ‘Hey, buddy. Step on the scale, you’re 190 pounds, how the f**k are you making 145?’ Do something like that,” Rogan suggested.

“And come up with more weight classes. There should be a weight class every 10 pounds. This idea of these giant gaps like 185 to 205, that’s a 20-pound gap, that’s huge, that doesn’t exist in boxing. They should have every 10 pounds, 85, 95, 205, 225 and then unlimited,” he added.

Joe thinks champions like Islam shouldn’t deplete

Moreover, Rogan also pointed out how dehydration affects the performances of the fighters, especially the reigning champions. For the famous podcaster, guys like Makhachev should be spared from having to deplete just to make weight.

Instead, Rogan thinks the UFC should do something to adjust to the weight of the champions.

“Instead of having weight cuts just find out what the champion weighs. Don’t get rid of the championship belts. Find out what does Islam Makhachev weigh. Islam Makhachev is a UFC champion, the best pound-for-pound fighter on Earth. Find out what he weighs. What do you weigh if you were healthy? If weight cutting didn’t exist? Would it be 185, 190? Whatever that is. That’s how you fight now and we’re not going to weigh you in the day before and let you rehydrate. That’s crazy talk. Fight people your size,” Rogan explained.

Rogan has long been criticizing weight-cutting in MMA as he believes it puts fighters in danger. Though he made a good point about the issue, major changes in the UFC’s weight-cutting policies and weight classes are not expected to happen anytime soon.
