Joe Rogan, the voice behind The Joe Rogan Experience, is no stranger to fame. His podcast has hosted renowned guests like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg, cementing his position as one of the most influential podcasters. But when Rogan signed an eye-watering $250 million deal with Spotify, it wasn’t just about securing a massive payday.
During a candid conversation with Steven Rinella, Rogan shared that the deal allowed him to step back from overwhelming fame.
“That was the whole reason why I took the Spotify deal,” he explained. “I was like, ‘Good, they’re going to give me a lot of money and it’ll only be on Spotify so I’ll be 10 percent less famous.’”
Managing Fame’s Challenges
While Rogan enjoys his work, the burden of immense fame had taken a toll.
“There’s a certain level of fame though that’s a little unmanageable, and I’m in that level. It’s very unmanageable,” he admitted. The exclusivity of the Spotify deal gave him a chance to regain control of his life.
“Good,” he said. “Let me slide off into obscurity because, I mean, as long as I’m making money… I just enjoyed doing it.”
A Loyal Audience Matters Most
For Rogan, the shift to Spotify wasn’t about chasing more popularity. Instead, it was about focusing on the audience that truly valued his work.
“I don’t care how many people [like it]. The people that like it will still listen, so maybe I’ll have less casual fans. Like, who cares? Who cares, you know?”
The deal helped Rogan focus on what he loves most—creating engaging conversations with fascinating guests. By stepping away from the constant glare of fame, he’s found a way to stay true to his passion while navigating life on his terms.
