Joe Rogan detailed one of Jon Jones’ pre-fight routines that essentially helped him be more mentally prepared than his opponents.

Jon regularly works on his mindset

Speaking on a recent episode of the JRE podcast, Rogan revealed what he discovered about Jones’ unique pre-fight ritual. According to the UFC commentator, “Bones” regularly walks inside the Octagon prior to the start of an event just to set his mind into combat mode.

Rogan believes that by doing so, Jones was always mentally in the zone everytime he fights and it evidently worked to his advantage.

“These guys like Jon Jones would famously walk out before the fight, and he would move around the Octagon, he would like soak it all in while no one was there. We’d get footage sometimes of him just moving around. You know, he just wanted to feel the floor under his feet, he wanted to see the cage and get himself in that mindset,” Rogan described.

“And you know, Jon is, if not the greatest, one of the absolute greatest of all time. He was meticulous and still is meticulous about his preparation. Meticulous about watching tape and footage, understanding who he is fighting, what their moves are, what they do, what’s their tells, what mistakes they make, and then visualizing success,” he added.

Rogan said many fighters are investing on mental coaches

Apart from Jones, Rogan also revealed that there have been more and more UFC fighters investing on mental coaches. The famous podcaster noted that these coaches help fighters in being mentally organized and prepared.

“You have to have a very special mind to be able to overcome that. I think it’s one of the reasons why a lot of fighters today are seeking out mental coaches. It’s very common… There’s quite a few different fighters now that utilize mental coaches and some sort of visualization coaching, where they have very specific goals in terms of how they want to walk out, they want to see the whole thing,” Rogan said.

What Jones would do next is still one of the hottest subjects of discussion in the UFC. There is no concrete decision yet but UFC president Dana White seems to be in favor of Jones vs. Tom Aspinall for the heavyweight title unification bout.
