Cameron Smotherman gave undefeated 19-year-old bantamweight Jay Alderete the veteran test at Fury FC 121. Alderete answered with the biggest win of his career, dropping the former UFC fighter with a head kick before forcing a technical submission in the second round on Sunday, July 19, 2026, in Houston.
Sherdog lists the official result as Jay Alderete def. Cameron Smotherman by technical submission via Brabo choke at 3:10 of Round 2. The win moved Alderete to 6-0 as a pro and gave him a stoppage over a fighter whose UFC run included a knockout loss to Kai Asakura and a serious weight-cut scare earlier in 2026.

Low-Blow Claims And Security Followed The Finish
The official result is clear, but the fight carried foul controversy before the final sequence. Smotherman was visibly hurt by low blows, and the referee eventually took a point from Alderete in Round 2. The fight continued, and Alderete found the head kick and choke before the foul debate could reach the scorecards.
The scene stayed tense after Smotherman woke up and returned to his feet. Alderete appeared to give him the D-X crotch chop and kept talking from across the cage. Smotherman tried to move back toward him, and security stepped between the fighters before the argument could restart the fight after the stoppage.
Smotherman later posted his reaction on Instagram Stories, saying he had never felt so cheated and pointing to what he believed were repeated fouls.

He added that Alderete could not touch him outside those moments and said the story was far from over. Those are Smotherman’s claims, not an official commission ruling, but they explain why he was still trying to get back to Alderete after the stoppage.

Alderete entered as an unbeaten teenage prospect whose level of opposition had been part of the question. Smotherman entered as the 28-year-old veteran test with real UFC experience and enough power to punish a young bantamweight for mistakes.
The finish gives Alderete a stronger argument for a bigger assignment. Sherdog credits him with five finishes in six professional wins, and now one of them is attached to a viral UFC Fight Pass clip against a former UFC fighter. The complication is the same one Smotherman raised after the fight: the low-blow dispute will stay attached to the result until Alderete gets another step up.
The bantamweight pipeline is crowded, and regional prospects have to make noise to get noticed. Alderete made plenty at Fury FC 121.
