While many within the combat sports community were quick to apologize for spreading misinformation surrounding Olympic gold medal-winning boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, former Strikeforce middleweight titleholder Jake Shields doubled down on his belief that both women are biologically male.
Even before stepping inside the ring to compete at this year’s Summer Games in Paris, Khelif and Yu-ting were the subject of a widespread controversy courtesy of a social media rumor claiming that both participants were men. It all began when a report from the International Boxing Association revealed that the pair were disqualified from the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi after failing a gender test.
Details regarding the type of test were not revealed by the Russian-led IBA, but Khelif and Yu-ting allegedly produced XY chromosomes which typically identify someone as male.
However, the International Olympic Committee and high-ranking officials from each fighter’s country made it clear that both Khelif and Yu-ting were born female and had never identified as any other gender, nor had either gone through any kind of gender reassignment.
That was enough for most people, including Israel Adesanya and Claressa Shields, to withdraw their initial criticism and issue an apology. As for Jake Shields, the former UFC fighter and perpetual internet bully is more than happy to continue spreading misinformation, as evidenced by a recent post on social media targeting both Khelif and Yu-ting after they won gold medals in their respective divisions.
“Two men competed in the women’s boxing at the Olympics. Both failed sex and testosterone tests,” Shields wrote on X. “Both took gold without losing a single round. Many people are in complete denial and will continue to pretend these are women.”

Jake Shields Has a Long History of Spreading Hate on Social Media
If you’ve ever come across Jake Shield’s feed on X, you probably aren’t very surprised by his latest statement. He has regularly made disparaging remarks about the LGBTQ community and has often expressed his disdain for transgendered individuals.
In January, he faced backlash after calling the NHL “gay as f*ck” after seeing a video of an Edmonton Oilers player using rainbow-colored tape on his hockey stick.
Shields also picked a fight with trans mixed martial artist Alana McLaughlin and called for the public execution of anyone who helps in the transition from one gender to another—including doctors, therapists, teachers, and guidance counselors.
Throughout his MMA career, Jake Shields amassed a solid-sounding 33-11 record but failed to accomplish much outside of the regional scene. He went 4-3 inside the Octagon with one no-contest and 2-2 inside the PFL Smart Cage. After retiring from the sport in 2018, Shields continued to compete in submission grappling where he lost four of his last six scraps on the mat.
