Conor McGregor doing Conor McGregor things. Or tings depending on the point of view. The biggest, most famous, richest mixed martial arts fighter ever is spiraling.
On the third anniversary of UFC 196, Mystic Mac claimed MMA was now just his third source of income. The fight game was just something he did for fun. Sponsorship’s? Proper 12? Public appearances? Whatever the case may be, it feels like McGregor has had one foot out the (cage) door for more than a minute now.
It’s rare that fighters become bigger than the brand. The UFC does everything in their power to no let this happen. Those three letters before every thing else or the UFC loses control.
Maybe less than a handful of fighters have every reached this level of co-promotion. Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey, and Conor McGregor are slam dunk picks. After that? Maybe Chuck Liddell, maybe GSP and that’s about it.
Above anything else, the UFC loves control.
With no UFC fights in plain view, McGregor’s life outside of the cage is close to out of control. Sure the life of a millionaire A-list celebrity is fun, but at what point does Mac get bored with it all? What’s his next challenge?
His last two challenges in the boxing ring and cage, quickly devolved into blowouts. With that big of ego attached to his name, how could Mystic Mac go out like that.
This week Conor McGregor got arrested for the dumbest thing. 5:00 AM leaving the club and he smashes some random dude’s phone. Dumb move.
