10 months removed from his lights-out performance against Leon Edwards in Manchester, Belal Muhammad puts his welterweight world title on the line for the first time against streaking Aussie sensation Jack Della Maddalena.
Both fighters walk into the UFC 315 headliner boasting impressive unbeaten streaks. Muhammad has come out on top in his last 11 fights—one away from George St-Pierre’s all-time welterweight record—while ‘JDM’ has won an incredible 17 straight, a streak that dates back to October 2016.
Round 1
JDM presses forward and throws a jab. Muhammad throws a kick to the body in response. JDM appears to clip Muhammad with a right hand. JDM lands a couple of kicks to the body, and Muhammad responds with his own right hand. Muhammad jabs, followed by a nice right hand that connects. Muhammad throws a combination, but JDM covers up. JDM throws a head kick with a straight right hand hidden behind it.
Muhammad throws a high kick, but it’s blocked by JDM. The Aussie lands a stiff leg kick and gets a left hand through Muhammad’s guard. Muhammad punches his way inside and clinches up. JDM fends off the takedown attempt and separates. Muhammad throws a body kick with a minute to go in the round. JDM throws a knee up the middle, but Muhammad dodges and lands a counter right. Muhammad throws a high kick, but eats an uppercut from JDM. They engage in a brief exchange before time runs out on the round.
Round 2
Things get off to a speedy start in the second with both fighters throwing a variety of strikes. Muhammad throws a head kick, which gets partially through as JDM drops his head down. JDM lands a right as Muhammad is starting to bite on the challenger’s feints. Muhammad attempts to throw a counter, but he’s just out of range. JDM is connecting with teep kicks, and he connects with a big right hand. Muhammad touches up JDM with a right.
JDM goes low with a kick and then immediately comes back up top with a high kick. Muhammad continues to punish JDM’s side with the body kicks. With 90 seconds left in the round, Muhammad shoots for a takedown, but he fails to get JDM down to the mat. The fighters separate and return to the center of the Octagon. Muhammad connects with a stiff right hand. JDM counters and appears to have Muhammad bleeding from his nose. Muhammad throws a spinning back fist that’s out of range. JDM spins, mocking Muhammad before ending the round with a high-kick attempt.
Round 3
Muhammad opens up a little bit with his striking, but JDM comes right back with a combination punctuated by a thudding right hand that lands. JDM shows off his head movement and lands a couple of jabs that pops Muhammad’s head back. Muhammad jabs and follows it up with a solid one-two. JDM responds with a stiff jab. They trade right hands, but Muhammad sticks him with another one before going back to the jab.
Muhammad attempts a knee, but JDM covers up. Muhammad swings big, but he’s just out of range of the Aussie. JDM lands with a right hand after eating a jab from Muhammad. JDM connects with a jab. Muhammad moves in to try and respond, but gets stuck with a left. Muhammad keeps coming forward and clinches up against the fence with 20 seconds to go in the round. JDM flips the script and tries his own takedown, but he can’t get Muhammad down before the end of the round.
Round 4
Muhammad offers an early uppercut, and JDM gets out of range. Muhammad lands with a good left hook. Muhammad is starting to let his hands go more, but he eats a big combination from JDM. Muhammad comes back with a clean one-two. JDM with a counter right hand. Muhammad fires a jab. Muhammad throws an uppercut and rushes in for a takedown. Muhammad is taking some big shots as he desperately tries to close the distance and clinch up against the fence.
Muhammad gets on JDM’s back near the fence, but he can’t get the Aussie down. JDM pushes Muhammad’s back to the cage, and the champ appears to be taking a bit of a breather with just under two minutes to go. Muhammad does some dirty boxing before separating. Muhammad throws a high kick that partially gets through. Muhammad follows it with a jab. Muhammad shoots for a double leg, but JDM defends. Muhammad doesn’t give up, but JDM slips away. Muhammad lands a right on the break. As the round ends, JDM heads to his stool with a significant amount of blood coming from around his ear.
Round 5
Muhammad is breathing heavily at the beginning of the round, but that isn’t stopping him from pressuring JDM and throwing volume. JDM lands a short shot in close. Muhammad responds, landing a left hand on the retreating JDM. Della Maddalena lands a knee near the fence that busts Muhammad’s cheek open.
With over three minutes left in the fight, Muhammad lands his first takedown and settles into half guard. Muhammad drops some elbows from the top. JDM bucks and gets back to his feet. Both fighters are covered in blood as we reach two minutes to go. JDM’s left eye is closed shut as Muhammad moves in and eats an elbow. JDM connects with a left hand that wobbles Muhammad. JDM is going off, believing he has the champ hurt.
JDM lands strikes against the fence, but then clinches up, perhaps giving himself a breather. Muhammad pushes his way out of the clinch and throws Muhammad halfway across the cage. Muhammad gets on top and starts throwing ground and pound. JDM gets back to his feet, but he’s pressed against the fence. JDM fights Muhammad off and presses forward with 30 seconds to go.
JDM lands a combination, and Muhammad is wearing the damage. Muhammad is exhausted. JDM throws an uppercut,t and the fight ends with both fighters bloodied and the Montreal crowd on its feet.
Official Result: Jack Della Maddalena def. Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) to win the UFC welterweight world championship.
