The UFC announced on Thursday that a huge middleweight fight between highly ranked contenders Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Kelvin Gastelum booked for UFC 224 on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro.
Jacare Souza was last seen in the main event of UFC on Fox 27, where he defeated fellow middleweight contender Derek Brunson for the second time by knockout. Prior to that bout, however, Souza was beaten by current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker last April with a vicious head kick and punches, snapping a two-fight win streak.
The winner of the seventeenth season of the Ultimate Fighter, Kelvin Gastelum is coming off a knockout victory over Michael Bisping at UFC Shanghai last November. Prior to that, he suffered a submission (arm-triangle choke) loss to Chris Weidman last July.
The winner of the fight will possibly earn a shot at the UFC middleweight title. Current champion Robert Whittaker is expected to compete, Yoel Romero, later this year.
Brazilian legends Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida also expected to face each other at UFC 224.
