It looks like Shinya Aoki is jealous of Takanori Gomi

Remember that one time when you thought Shinya Aoki was some playful, Japanese Carebear hybrid that always wore silly seizure-inducing pants and came out to fun, whimsical music? Remember that one time when you fronted like you knew what ‘whimsical’ meant until you Googled it like five seconds ago? Well all those preconceived notions of Shinya Aoki came crashing down when he broke Hirota’s arm at Dynamite!! 2009, repeatedly gave him the finger and then proceeded to fly around the ring like he just got an extra 30 minutes in elementary school recess. Dude is the alpha male, the pants are just a decoy. Now it appears that Shinya Aoki may have beef with Takanori Gomi.

After Gomi’s win over Tyson Griffin, the editors at Kamipro had a twenty-minute Ustream ‘Gomi celebration’ show where they insisted Gomi was on the road to reviving Japanese MMA and bringing it to the American audience. For some reason, Kamipro decided not to archive this show however according to the magazine, Shinya Aoki called editor Jean Saito and asked ‘Who do you cheer for Gomi or me?‘. The question was followed by an email from someone named ‘Mr. Ganz’ who confirmed that Shinya Aoki is jealous of Gomi’s recent popularity in the UFC.

Kamipro responded by saying other Japanese fighters are not jealous of Gomi and that most of his fellow fighters expected Takanori to win. During the show, they also attempted to rank Gomi among the lightweights and decided that he was below BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar but above Gilbert Melendez. They didn’t mention Shinya Aoki in these rankings.

Shortly after the show, FEG executive Sadaharu Tanigawa tweeted something that seems to be somewhat of an insult in Japanese, but when translated to English, it makes about as much sense as a handwritten speech from Sarah Palin:

“人に頭を下げすぎて、ぎっくり腰に。痛い…。なんか五味君、試合したの?勝ったの?” / “Bow down to the people too, to back out. Ouch …. Gomi you something, in a game? Who won?”

Whatever it was, apparently it warranted a flurry of responses on Twitter. Now you’re probably sitting down in your office chair asking yourself ‘What’s the deal with these two? Why haven’t they fought against each other yet?’. Well, the answer is large, giant ‘no one knows‘. They had a chance to bang at Pride 12 but Pride execs matched Gomi up with David Baron in a non-title fight instead of the relatively unknown (8-2 at the time) Shinya Aoki. At Pride 13, Gomi defend his title against Marcus Aurélio who he beat in a split-decision while Aoki submitted Clay French on the same card. The bout could have happened at the Dream vs. Sengoku NYE event if Sengoku officials didn’t insist on their lightweight champion facing off against Dream’s lightweight champion in some display of Japanese MMA supremacy. Apparently that didn’t work out so well for Hirota’s arm. [Source]
