Islam Makhachev is waiting for the UFC to make a decision on his next fight.

The newest UFC champion is Islam Makhachev who is now wearing the lightweight strap after his UFC 280 win over Charles Oliveira. The 23-1 fighter has shown that he is the best at 155 pounds right now and is willing to take on any challengers. The UFC has a good one in mind as there are trying to set up a fight between Makhachev and the pound-for-pound king Alexander Volkanovski. Although it would seem that the fight was a done deal following UFC 280, it seems that there are still some details to work out.

Volkanovski inserted himself in the lightweight title conversation in the leadup to the UFC 280 bout. He offered himself up to be a fill-in for the main event between Makhachev and Oliveira. He attended the event, made weight, and although his services weren’t needed, placed himself in line for the winner. Now that Makhachev is holding the belt he will have the pleasure of facing the featherweight champ Volkanavski next.

Islam Makhachev is unsure when he will be fighting Alexander Volkanovski

The original idea was for Volkanovski to challenge Makhachev for the lightweight belt in Perth, Australia on Feb. 12. That is Volkanovski’s home country and there has not been an event held in Australia since 2019. This would be a huge PPV event and it makes sense to have this bout added as the main event. However, it seems the UFC may have another date in mind.

Volkanovski called for Makhachev to confirm their fight on social media. He asked him if he was a man of his word and to sign the contract. Makhachev responded with a Tweet of his own.

“I’m not sure what UFC wants, February Australia or March Vegas, I honestly don’t care about location and opponent, I never choose opponents,” he wrote on Twitter. “Just send a contract and stop playing games.”

Whatever date is landed on it seems that this fight will most likely be contested before April. Both men want the fight and Makhachev is looking to fight before Ramadan which begins on March 22.
