Islam Makhachev had barely finished celebrating his welterweight title win from November fifteen before attention shifted toward possible challengers. Several contenders produced big moments on that same night, and the conversation continued when UFC Qatar added more movement to the rankings.
The co main event in Doha saw Ian Machado Garry earn a victory over Belal Muhammad. As soon as the fight ended, Garry used the spotlight to send a message straight toward the champion. Makhachev waited until after the event to offer his reaction.
Makhachev explains the scenario where Ian Machado Garry could receive a title opportunity
While Makhachev had mentioned Kamaru Usman as the opponent he would prefer for his first defense, he admitted that Machado Garry did enough to remain part of the conversation. Speaking through a translation from Ushatayka on YouTube, he described the state of the welterweight division and how the selection process might unfold.
“At my event, two guys were fighting,” Makhachev said. “Both won their fights early. Both are young and finish fights well but now we have a division, I think, the most active, the youngest, where the most competitive fights are. I think the UFC will decide soon.
“Yesterday there was a good fight. The former champion fought a young guy and I think we have at least three or four contenders now. In the near future, probably in two weeks, it will be clear who the next contender will be.”
When asked specifically about Machado Garry, he acknowledged the matchup.
“It would be interesting,” Makhachev said. “He’s also a good fighter and on a good winning streak and young. I think it will turn out interesting. We’ll see. He didn’t surprise me yesterday. If he surprised the UFC, then he will probably be next.”
Another talking point from the event was Arman Tsarukyan’s victory over Dan Hooker. Tsarukyan was once scheduled to face Makhachev for the lightweight title at UFC three eleven before a back issue forced him out and Renato Moicano stepped in on short notice.
Makhachev commented on Tsarukyan’s showing and what it means for the lightweight division.
“I assumed he would win. Well, not so dominant but I thought he would win. I think Arman has already stated and proven that he deserves a title shot and will probably fight for it in his next fight.”
Following his welterweight title win, Makhachev expressed interest in defending the belt at a historic location.
