Islam Makhachev got fans talking again with one simple reaction. After Ilia Topuria and Michael Morales posed for a photo together in Madrid, Makhachev replied with a telephone emoji, a short response that immediately sparked fresh speculation about his next opponent. The timing stood out because Makhachev’s own return has already been a live talking point, especially with recent discussion around when the UFC plans to bring him back.
Both Topuria and Morales have been discussed as possible future opponents. Topuria has been linked to Makhachev for a long time, while Morales has become a more realistic option at welterweight as his profile keeps rising. That is why one emoji was enough to reopen two different conversations at once.
Topuria and Makhachev have circled each other for months. Topuria previously pushed for a title fight when he was still featherweight champion, and the matchup stayed hot after he moved to lightweight. But the immediate path appears blocked. Topuria is scheduled to defend his lightweight title against interim champion Justin Gaethje on the UFC White House card on June 14, which makes a near-term fight with Makhachev unlikely. That lightweight picture has stayed noisy for a while, and Topuria’s own standing has only added to it after other recent headlines around his place in the division and even his public comments on big names from Khabib’s era.
Michael Morales looks like the cleaner option
If Makhachev returns this summer, Morales looks like the more realistic opponent on timing alone. Makhachev’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has already said the plan is for him to defend against a true welterweight next. Morales fits that plan much more cleanly than Topuria right now, and that possibility has already started gaining traction as more people connect him to Makhachev’s next move at 170.
Morales has also earned the conversation. The unbeaten Ecuadorian strengthened his contender case by knocking out Sean Brady at UFC 322 last November. He has finished five of his seven UFC wins, and his momentum has made him one of the more serious names in the title picture. That is a big part of why the emoji landed the way it did. Morales is not just standing next to Topuria in a random photo. He is a live option.

Makhachev did not explain what he meant, so anything beyond that would be guesswork. What is clear is that one emoji was enough to put attention back on the two most interesting names around him right now. Topuria is the bigger crossover fight. Morales is the cleaner welterweight choice. Until the UFC says more, that is really the only honest read.
