A week after Islam Makhachev’s next-fight timing was already back in the conversation, the UFC welterweight champion found himself in a very different cage moment at PFL Tampa. This time he was not banking rounds or chasing another belt. He was in Magomed Magomedov’s corner, deciding his fighter had taken enough after a nasty shoulder injury against Daniel Marcos.
Magomedov, a one-time Bellator title challenger, was ahead in the fight flow before the whole thing got weird. He spent large chunks of the first two rounds wrestling Marcos, forcing clinches, and making the former UFC bantamweight deal with a fight that was more grind than highlight reel. Marcos did have his moments, especially late in the second, when a big knee landed and Magomedov’s left shoulder appeared to pop out during the exchange.
The stoppage clip shows the moment Makhachev threw in the towel for Magomedov, giving Marcos the TKO win instead of letting a compromised fighter keep playing with fire.

Makhachev Made The Corner Call Before Things Got Worse
The scene between rounds was the kind of thing that makes every cornerman in combat sports start sweating. Makhachev and the rest of Magomedov’s team worked on the shoulder during the break, trying to get the joint back where it belonged while Magomedov still wanted to fight. That is tough-guy wiring, sure, but there is a thin line between grit and letting pride drive the bus off a cliff.
The doctor checked Magomedov before the third round and allowed him to continue. Once the action restarted, Marcos clinched with him almost immediately, and Makhachev made the sane call. The official result went down as Daniel Marcos def. Magomed Magomedov by TKO due to shoulder injury at 0:11 of Round 3.
The injury sequence was just as uncomfortable as it sounds. Magomedov returned to the fight with the shoulder still clearly bothering him, then had his corner step in when Marcos forced the issue again. PFL has had plenty of wild injury and title drama over the years, including Movlid Khaybulaev losing PFL gold outside the cage, but this was a pure corner-protection call in real time.

For Marcos, this is a strange but valuable PFL debut win after his 5-1 UFC run ended with more confusion than closure. He did not get the clean violent finish every fighter wants on a fresh stage, but he did stay dangerous enough to make a hurt opponent pay for staying in there.
For Magomedov, the loss is brutal because he looked like he had the right game plan before the shoulder betrayed him. PFL nights can flip in an instant, whether it is a heavyweight title finish like Vadim Nemkov submitting Renan Ferreira or a late medical scramble like this one. This was less about a highlight and more about a champion in the corner knowing when the bravest thing is to stop the fight.
