Islam Makhachev remains the UFC welterweight champion after a demanding five-round test from Ian Machado Garry in the UFC 330 main event.
Makhachev defeated Machado Garry by unanimous decision Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Judges Sal D’Amato and Mike Bell scored the fight 49-46, while Eric Colon returned a 48-47 card. The win moved Makhachev to 29-1, dropped Machado Garry to 17-2, and extended the champion’s record-setting UFC winning streak to 17.

Makhachev Banked The First Two Rounds
Round 1: Makhachev immediately made his grappling the center of the fight. The champion controlled the opening round on the mat and limited the space Machado Garry needed to turn the bout into a long-range striking match. All three judges scored the round 10-9 for Makhachev.
Round 2: Makhachev produced the biggest striking moment of the fight. He connected with a right hand and then a left high kick out of the clinch, briefly putting Machado Garry on the canvas. The challenger recovered, but the knockdown helped Makhachev sweep the round on all three scorecards.
Machado Garry Rallied In Round 3
Round 3: Machado Garry changed the momentum by increasing his output and out-landing a champion who appeared to be slowing. The Irish challenger won the round 10-9 on every official card, narrowing the fight after Makhachev’s early lead.
Round 4: Makhachev returned to repeated takedowns and stayed attached to Machado Garry through the grappling exchanges. Machado Garry landed the cleaner strikes, creating the closest round of the fight. D’Amato and Bell awarded it to Makhachev, while Colon gave it to Machado Garry.
Round 5: Makhachev closed like a champion. He put Machado Garry on the canvas, took his back, and held the position through the remainder of the fight. All three judges awarded Makhachev the final round, removing any doubt about which fighter would leave Philadelphia with the belt.

Garry Promises He Will Be Back
Machado Garry posted a long reaction afterward and made it clear he was not leaving Philadelphia discouraged.
“Tonight wasn’t my night,” Machado Garry said in the post-fight video. “I feel great, I did great, Islam was just better than me tonight, and that’s OK. I want everybody who loves me and supports me and wants to see me do better, I want you to know that I’m gonna be back. I’m not disheartened by this. I’m bulletproof in my mind. I’ll be back. I’m 28 years of age. I just fought arguably the greatest fighter we’ve ever seen in this sport – and I pushed him to the f*cking wire, and I’m so proud of myself, and I’m so proud of my team, and everything that we’ve done. I’m so proud of what I’ve done in this world and who I’ve become; nobody’s stopping me.
“Tonight was not my night. Islam, your team, congratulations. You guys did amazing. I have nothing but love and respect for everything you guys have done in this sport – I’ve said that to you. I’ll be back. There’s plenty of matchups in this sport. Plenty of fun matchups that I’m excited for. We’ll be back, and we’ll be better than ever. I love you all. Let’s go, baby.”
Makhachev Makes UFC History
The victory gave Makhachev 17 consecutive UFC wins, moving him beyond Anderson Silva’s longtime mark of 16. Makhachev also became only the fifth two-division UFC champion to record successful title defenses in both weight classes. UFC also published its official Makhachev post-fight interview after the result, identifying him as the welterweight champion speaking after his unanimous decision win over Machado Garry.
Machado Garry did not win the belt, but his third-round rally and competitive fourth showed why the UFC viewed him as a serious challenger. His performance also held up better than the one-sided outcome predicted by Michael Bisping before the fight.
The buildup had become personal by fight night. Machado Garry previously told reporters to focus only on Makhachev and the title fight, while Makhachev called him simply the next target during their final UFC 330 faceoff. Five rounds later, the champion had the decision and the standalone UFC win-streak record.
