  • The UFC lightweight champ wants the Olympics to be held in Russia once again

Islam Makhachev is one of the many who expressed their aversion to the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

The champ was gutted

The Paris Olympics organizers are now under fire following its controversial opening ceremony which appeared to have highlighted a mockery of ” The Last Supper.” Taking his thoughts to X, Makhachev described the program as “a shame and dark stain on Olympic movement,” before suggesting that the Olympic committee should make Russia its host country once again.

In an interview with Ushatayka, the reigning UFC lightweight champion was quizzed to address his profound comments about the subject. According to Makhachev, the entire thing was offensive to “all religions” and a showing that had no relation to sports whatsoever.

“To be honest, I watched some highlights of the Olympics opening ceremony. It was disgusting. This is disrespect for all religions, for all human values in general. Honestly, I even planned to go to the Olympics but after what I saw, I don’t want to go there,” Makhachev said.

“Firstly, Russia knows how to do it properly, cherishes human values and respects athletes and sports. What happened at the opening ceremony, I don’t think it has anything to do with sports,” he added.

Islam may undergo surgery

Makhachev has successfully defended his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. However, he suffered a hand injury afterwards and he recently revealed that he might undergo surgery for it.

That said, Makhachev admitted that in that case, he might not be able to fight on October, when the UFC goes to Abu Dhabi for UFC 308.
