Ilia Topuria Vows to ‘Move Up, Definitely’ After Islam Makhachev Bout at UFC 322, Calls It a Fight of ‘Giant Magnitude’ Toward a Historic Triple-Crown Goal

The unbeaten Spanish-Georgian champion says his plan to face Makhachev could lead him to an unprecedented third UFC title — if the lightweight clash at UFC 322 goes as expected.

Ilia Topuria has his eyes on history. Already a two-division standout with an unbeaten record, the fiery lightweight champion says his ambitions don’t end at 155 pounds. With Islam Makhachev moving toward another monumental challenge, Topuria believes their paths are destined to cross — and that it could become the most significant fight the UFC has ever staged.

At UFC 322, Makhachev looks to claim gold in another division, and for Topuria, that outcome could decide whether he makes the leap to chase a rare and historic third world championship.

‘It Would Be One of the Biggest Fights in UFC History’

Topuria didn’t hold back when discussing the magnitude of a possible meeting with Makhachev. Speaking to reporters in Georgia, the undefeated champion shared exactly how much he values what could be at stake for both men.

“I think it would be one of the biggest fights in UFC history,” Topuria said. “No one has ever fought for a third title, and Islam has dominantly finished everything he needed to do in his division and then changed weight classes. I think it’s a fight of a giant magnitude, which suits us all, as well as the UFC. If Islam loses, he may as well go back to Dagestan, to his farm and continue shepherding his sheep. But if he wins, I’ll definitely move up. Definitely. 100 percent.”

For Topuria, the opportunity isn’t just about adding another belt — it’s about solidifying a legacy few fighters could ever touch.

White House Card and Future Ambitions

Topuria also hinted that a White House event next year could be the perfect venue for a champion-versus-champion spectacle.
The idea of hosting such a bout in one of the most symbolic locations in sports and politics appeals to both his competitive nature and his sense of history.

If that matchup comes together, Topuria believes it would be the defining moment of his generation — not only for himself but for Makhachev and the UFC as a whole.

The Path to the Third Title

“El Matador” may be undefeated, but he’s far from done making statements. Dana White has already teased that Topuria could headline the promotion’s first card under its new Paramount+ streaming deal, depending on how the next contender lineup shakes out.

In the meantime, Topuria is happy about the logistical improvements the new partnership will bring for European fans and fighters.

“I’m very happy that this new deal with Paramount was signed,” Topuria said. “There were some challenges with the ESPN deal in terms of holding events in Europe. For example, when we had conversations about holding a UFC event in Spain, they would always ask for it to be held at the American prime time, which is 4-5 a.m. in Spain. Now, with this new deal, [UFC] will be able to hold events in Europe at local prime time, which works well for all of us who live on this side of the ocean.”

Should Makhachev secure another belt, the storyline writes itself — two dominant champions meeting at the peak of their powers, each representing different divisions, styles, and legacies.

Topuria’s confidence shows that he sees this as more than just another main event. It’s about becoming the first fighter to hold three world titles — something he believes is within reach if everything aligns.
