Ilia Topuria answered Justin Gaethje’s father after John Ray Gaethje called him “another little short guy” before the UFC Freedom 250 lightweight title fight.
Topuria and Gaethje are scheduled to meet on June 14 at the White House, with Topuria holding the undisputed UFC lightweight title and Gaethje carrying interim gold. Topuria is 17-0 as a professional, with seven knockouts, eight submissions, and two decision wins. Gaethje is 27-5, with 20 knockout wins, and is the first fighter in UFC history to win an interim lightweight title twice.
The exchange started after Gaethje posted a YouTube video showing scenes from camp and a family dinner. John Ray Gaethje spoke about the stakes and compared Topuria to shorter opponents Justin has already beaten.
“This is the biggest fight of his life but we’ve said that three or four other times,” John Ray Gaethje said. “He’s fighting another little short guy, and he’s done really well against [Michael] Chandler and [Rafael] Fiziev, and a few others. I just see the same thing happening for this fight. This is what we trained for. This is what he put his whole life into since he was 4 years old. I’m excited and ready for it to happen.”

Topuria responded on X with a message aimed directly at the Gaethje family.
“Fathers hope. Champions know.
I’ve heard this story before: bigger men, stronger men, better men. Men who said I was just a small guy who was about to get a lesson in humility.
They all learned the truth the same way.
Your son already knows who I am. On June 14th, you will,” Topuria wrote.

The “little short guy” line points to Gaethje’s past wins over Michael Chandler and Rafael Fiziev, two shorter lightweights who traded heavy exchanges with him. Topuria pushed back on the size argument while pointing to the same doubts he says followed him before. He is the former UFC featherweight champion, the current lightweight champion, and the first Georgian and Spanish fighter to win UFC gold.
Gaethje’s side framed the matchup around experience, size, and a career built since childhood. Topuria’s reply was that bigger and stronger opponents have already made that argument before him. The June 14 winner leaves UFC Freedom 250 as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.
