Topuria asked Trump why Gaethje was handed such a dangerous UFC Freedom 250 title fight.

Ilia Topuria used his Oval Office visit with Donald Trump to bring the attention right back to Justin Gaethje before UFC Freedom 250.

Topuria, Gaethje, Alex Pereira, and Ciryl Gane were at the White House as the UFC continued promoting its June 14 event in Washington, D.C. The card is expected to feature Topuria vs. Gaethje for the UFC lightweight title, with Pereira vs. Gane also attached to the interim heavyweight title picture after the promotion released its first White House faceoff footage.

The moment started politely. Topuria looked at Trump and said the meeting changed how he viewed him.

“I never thought you would be so kind,” Topuria said.

Trump answered with a short joke about his public image.

“Well, I have a false image,” Trump said.

Topuria then turned the conversation toward Gaethje. Standing near the man he is scheduled to fight, the unbeaten champion asked Trump why Gaethje was being handed the tougher side of the matchup.

“Why did you want to give the toughest test to a friend of yours?” Topuria asked.

Gaethje cut in before Trump could take the whole answer, and his response sounded exactly like a fighter who wanted that kind of chaos.

“Cause he knows that’s what I want,” Gaethje said.

Trump then leaned into the idea that UFC Freedom 250 should be built around hard fights instead of safe showcase spots.

“I do want — I want to give the hardest tests, that’s right,” Trump said. “We’re going to give the hardest tests and actually each one of you are fighting your hardest tests I think, right? You know your opponent very well. You feel good? What are your chances of winning?”

Topuria did not give Trump a cautious answer. He kept it short and confident.

“Oh, I have complete faith, 100 percent,” Topuria said. “I hope he has the same faith. That’s going to make an amazing fight.”

Topuria Points To Gaethje’s Toughest Test

Topuria enters UFC Freedom 250 at 17-0. He is the current UFC lightweight champion and previously held the UFC featherweight title. His championship run includes wins over Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira, and he recently said his UFC 317 payday removed financial pressure before this next title defense.

Gaethje is 27-5 and brings a different kind of threat than Topuria’s recent opponents. He is a two-time interim UFC lightweight champion, a former BMF titleholder, and a former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion. He also owns 20 knockout wins, so Topuria’s question was aimed at Gaethje’s assignment, not his own résumé.

The UFC has already pushed the event with arena and crowd details, including Trump discussing White House arena construction and Dana White outlining an Ellipse watch party plan. The Oval Office clip now gives Topuria vs. Gaethje a direct fighter exchange before the June 14 title fight.
