Ian Garry released a statement following his departure from UFC 296.
On Saturday, December 16, Garry was supposed to make his seventh walk to the Octagon during the UFC 296 main card. Unfortunately, the controversial UFC welterweight was forced to withdraw from his fight against Vicente Luque after falling ill with pneumonia.
Garry has been ridiculed by the MMA community for various reasons over the last few months, adding tons of attention to his upcoming fight. Therefore, ‘The Future’ decided to provide an update about his health status earlier today.
During the UFC 296 weigh-ins, TNT Sports was on-site and called Garry on the phone. The 26-year-old had this to say about the situation he’s been put in:
“I can barely breathe…It’s upsetting, it’s irritating, it’s annoying. You guys know I love to fight more than anything. I’ve never pulled out of a fight. I’ve never had to be in this situation, but here we are. I’m gonna deal with it the way the we deal with everything, the best in the world… The truth is I’ve got what I got. I’ll deal with it and then we’ll get back on the horse and we’ll fight.”

Ian Garry shuts down rumors about his son also being sick
Rumors began spiraling out of control regarding Ian Garry’s UFC 296 status before Dana White confirmed he was unable to fight. One of the false rumors spread was that Garry’s infant son was also experiencing a similar sickness, causing concern among fans.
During the previously mentioned phone call with TNT Sports, Garry shut down the rumors that his child was sick and took a shot at Chael Sonnen:
“That’s Chael [Sonnen] talking out of his f*cking a*s and making stuff up with his creative journalism license…Yeah, [my son is] fine. He’s absolutely fine. The only thing is he’s more annoyed that he can’t go and watch the fights. He loves watching the fights.”
Ian Garry made his UFC debut in November 2021. Since then, he’s secured the number-ten ranking in the welterweight division due to a 6-0 promotion record, with three wins coming by KO/TKO. ‘The Future’ last fought on August 19, defeating Neil Magny by unanimous decision.
