In the wake of a July loss, Whittaker spoke honestly about where his championship ambitions stand at 34.
Robert Whittaker is preparing for a major U.S. return, targeting one of the most unique fight settings in UFC history. The former middleweight champion wants to compete at the UFC White House event, aiming for a showdown with fellow top contender Sean Strickland.
“I would love to fight Sean Strickland in front of the White House,” Whittaker told Fox Sports Australia. “For one, I think that’s going to be a monumental occasion. When are you ever going to be able to fight in front of the White House ever again? But I’ve been trying to fight Sean for the longest of times just because I like that fight. We’ve been in the same circles for a while. He’s still ranked 3, which puts me right back into a conversation that I want to be a part of, and I think it’ll be a fun fight. I think it’ll be a good fight to watch. I’d love to be on that.”
Family First, Then a Big Return
Whittaker explained why he is unlikely to chase a February return in Australia. A new baby is due soon, and he wants to be present for his family through the holidays rather than spend that time in training camp.
“You know what, I want to, my head wants to but I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m having a baby, it’s due in a few weeks and I want to be there for that period. I want to be there for that period, I want to be there for my kids during Christmas. I don’t want to be in camp during this period, I’ve missed a lot of them. Granted, I’ve had a lot of kids, but yeah, my heart’s just telling me I don’t really want to be in camp during this period of the new baby, introducing it to the family, Christmas and stuff.
“I’ll be at the card for sure, but I’ll probably be looking [to fight] a little bit later down the track.”
Who Whittaker Wants Next
Whittaker made clear why Sean Strickland is his preferred opponent for a big U.S. comeback: the matchup would put him back into meaningful contention and it’s a fight he has wanted for some time.
“He’s still ranked 3, which puts me right back into a conversation that I want to be a part of, and I think it’ll be a fun fight. I think it’ll be a good fight to watch. I’d love to be on that,” Whittaker said. via MMAFighting
At the same time, Whittaker acknowledged other plausible matchups that would keep him active and competitive in the 185-pound division.
Sean Strickland’s Perspective
Strickland, meanwhile, has his own preferred opponents for his upcoming return. In a recent interview, he shared:
“I want to fight somebody like ‘Fluffy’ [Hernandez]. Fluffy puts me in title contention. Especially with him, because all he does, he’s like the American Chimaev… Go beat your cans and then let me know when you’re ready,” Strickland said.
This makes Whittaker vs. Strickland a compelling possibility while also aligning with the UFC’s middleweight landscape.
