It wasn’t long ago that Ronda Rousey took some heat for claiming she could beat any woman in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
“One thing I couldn’t stand when I was only coming into MMA from judo is all this people saying that the Jiu-Jitsu people would beat the judo fighters on the ground,”she said, “It was such a stereotype. I still think that I can beat any BJJ girl in the world, gi or no gi, any weight division, black belt all the way in any rule setting.”
On cue, hulking BJJ super-champion Gabi Garcia crashed through a brick wall and grunted her disbelief.“I rather believe she didn’t know what she was saying,” Gabi said. “It’s not possible for someone to display such a lack of humbleness. She disrespected Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. The first quality of a champion is to be humble and to respect others. As my Professior Fabio Gurgel said, I’m ready and at her disposal to fight her under any rules, with or without gi.”
To put things in perspective, Gabi has been annihilating her Jiu-Jitsu competitors for years, winning 11 gold medals at Abu Dhabi and the World Championships since 2008. She is undoubtedly a highly-skilled competitor, but she also happens to stand 6’2”, weighing 236 pounds. You can watch her wield that considerable mass in an impressive roll with Marcelo Garcia here.
Just as her human steamroll was in full-effect, Gabi hit a husky road bump in 2013, when she was automatically disqualified from the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championships after testing positive for the banned fertility drug Clomiphene. Despite looking like the vascular result of a genetic lab experiment, the USADA“was able to conclude, to a comfortable satisfaction, that Garcia had not acted negligently and was not at a fault for a positive test.”So while they stripped her title, did they not punish her with any period of ineligibility from competition.
Now, Gabi is finally making the transition to MMA. But she is clearly addicted to the immense size advantage she has routinely enjoyed in open-weight BJJ competitions. And on December 23rd, at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, she will fight a 135-pound, 42-year-old woman. Even worse, her miniaturized grappling dummy, Megumi Yabushita, is on a six-fight losing streak. Because Mixed Martial Arts is unregulated in Japan, Chinese MMA promotion Real Fight Championship had no problem getting the embarrassing matchup sanctioned. The show will also host Kron Gracie’s MMA debut, hopefully under less ridiculous circumstances.
Gabi once accused Ronda Rousey of disrespecting Jiu-Jitsu, disrepecting other people, and lacking humility. It’s time for this would-be champion of Jiu-Jitsu’s code of honor to buy a gigantic mirror and do some soul-searching, presumably between flexes.
Gabi’s cutting to 205 for the fight though, so it’s cool you guys.
