Herb Dean explained why he paused before stopping Francis Ngannou’s first-round knockout of Philipe Lins at MVP MMA 1. His read was based on Lins’ fall, Lins’ defensive response, and Ngannou’s position after the knockdown.
Ngannou stopped Lins at 4:31 of Round 1 on the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano card, improving to 19-3 in MMA with 14 knockout wins. Ngannou landed the finishing shot and backed away instead of throwing follow-up punches.
Lins entered as a former 2018 PFL heavyweight tournament winner, UFC veteran, Bellator veteran, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. After the Ngannou loss at MVP MMA 1, his record moved to 18-6, with five defeats by knockout.
Dean addressed the stoppage on The Ariel Helwani Show. Helwani noted that Ngannou backed off after the knockdown and asked Dean what he saw before calling the fight.

Dean Says Lins’ Fall Was “A Hard One” To Read
Dean said he was going to stop the fight, but the fall required a closer look from his angle.
“No, I definitely call it off. That one was a hard one because, believe it or not, we spent a lot of time looking at the way people fall and analyzing falls. The way he fell wasn’t a definitive out-before-you-hit-the-ground type of fall.”
Dean said Lins was out, but the way Lins fell was not the only signal he was using.
“Obviously he was. You never know what’s happening with people, but the way he fell, I definitely wanted to look at it.”
Dean then explained why his own cage position mattered if Ngannou had stepped forward and Lins had not defended.
“I was in a good position if Francis was advancing and he wasn’t turning to defend, to be able to push and put my hands out. But I did take a second to look at him.”
Ngannou’s walk-off prevented extra damage. Dean still had to confirm Lins was done, but he did not have to pull Ngannou away while more punches were landing.
Dean is a former professional MMA fighter with a 2-3 record, has officiated major UFC and ONE Championship bouts, and has won multiple Referee of the Year honors. His explanation was specific to this sequence: Lins’ fall was not instantly definitive from Dean’s angle, Ngannou did not add follow-up shots, and Dean was close enough to intervene if Lins failed to defend.
Ngannou’s finish kept the MVP MMA matchmaking debate moving after Daniel Cormier and Ben Askren questioned several one-sided fights on the card. Dean’s role was to read the fall, check for defense, and stop the fight before Lins took extra shots.
