  • Henry Cejudo proposed to make Merab Dvalishvili a backup fighter in his UFC 288 title fight with Aljamain Sterling
  • “Triple C” has no problems dealing with either Aljo or “The Machine”

Returning former UFC double champion Henry Cejudo came up with a bold proposal while watching Merab Dvalishvili vs. Petr Yan at UFC Vegas 71 and he wants Dana White to consider it.

A backup fighter is essential

According to “Triple C,” it would be best for the UFC president to appoint “The Machine” as a backup fighter because he still believes Aljamain Sterling will eventually withdraw from their title fight at UFC 288.

“Dear Dana White, I’m over here watching the number two number [and] three contender and I tell you what, I got a feeling that Al Jizzling is more likely to kind of back out of this fight. So, that being said why don’t you give me Merab? Since Sean O’Malley wants to wait, he wants to take his time, why don’t we make Merab the backup at UFC 288? Why don’t we do it that way? because I have a feeling that [Sterling] [will] eventually back out,” Cejudo said on his YouTube channel.

Triple C wants both Merab and Aljo

Dvalishvili put on an incredible performance against Yan at UFC Vegas 71 to earn a unanimous decision victory in the lopsided bout. Cejudo was impressed as well but he is confident neither Dvalishvili nor Sterling could spoil his UFC comeback. In fact, “Triple C” even said he’d take on both fighters on the same night.

“It’s going to be the same game plan for both of these chomps: wrestle, strike every time they throw something heavy, they go in there for takedowns. Anyways, Dana White if you’re listening to me let’s have Merab as a backup. Newark, New Jersey, UFC 288 because I want both, if I can fight both of them the same night, they can both get it,” Cejudo added.

Cejudo has been repeatedly predicting that Sterling will opt to pull out from their UFC 288 title match and has been vocal about his concerns about it. Prior to mentioning Dvalishvili, “Triple C” already notified Sean O’Malley to “stay ready” in case his prediction turns out to be right.

UFC 288 will take place on May 6, 2023, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This will mark Cejudo’s long-awaited UFC return after being inactive since 2020. Sterling, meanwhile, will look to defend his bantamweight strap for the third time.
