Heads up, Ricardo Mayorga is making his MMA debut tonight, and he's 20 lbs overweight

Ricardo Mayorga looks like a guy that knows a guy that can sell you an AK-47 from the trunk of his Cadillac El Dorado. If you’re not familiar with Ricardo Mayorga, he was the former WBC and WBA welterweight champion among a list of other titles that you will probably never own in your life. In September of 2009, Ricardo signed with Shine Fights and MMA legend/underground cage-fighting promoter extraordinaire, Din Thomas, offered to be his first opponent. After months of arduous smack talk, the entire card was halted by perhaps one of the nuttiest incidents in MMA history.

Like a proud father who slaps bumper stickers on the back of his SUV claiming there son/daughter is an honor student of <insert Midwest conservative elementary school here>, former CEO of Shine Fights, Devin Price, held onto the Din Thomas vs. Ricardo Mayorga card like it was his first born.

Don King filed an injunction in May 2010 to cancel the card on the claim that he represented Ricardo Mayorga throughout his boxing career and even in MMA, Don King claimed that he still ‘owned him.’ Devin Price took Don King’s legal threat and promptly urinated on it in a press release from Shine Fights shortly after Don King’s statement.

“MMA fans are going to see an electrifying evening of fighting. I have faith in the American justice system, and I believe justice will prevail. When one operates within the rules and regulations, one has nothing to worry about. As far as King goes, it is just his usual smoke-and-mirrors. He shoots his mouth off about an injunction to try and sway the media’s perception, and then waits until the last minute to file in hopes of affecting the success of the promotion. I know the difference between MMA and boxing–and so does Don King. The members of the media, and both MMA and boxing fans, can clearly see that Don King is up to his ‘trickerations.’ This is a wonderful and exciting promotion Shine Fights has put together for both MMA and boxing fans, and I look forward to Saturday, May 15th.”

Yes, Shine Fights really pulled the ‘trickerations’ card. Within the same week in 2010, Don King defined what a ‘Raw Power Move’ was by walking into a court room with two duffel bags filled to the brim with one million dollars in order to prevent Shine Fights from going down — and it worked. Fans that paid for tickets were met with no explanation as to what happened and eventually had to go through some snail mail process to get a refund. As for the fighters that were promised a paycheck, they were verbally upset and even Shogun Rua had something to say about the debacle.

We don’t really know who was at fault, Don King for waiting until the last minute to cancel the show or Shine Fights for completely ignoring King’s legal threats. Regardless, the MMA world missed the astronomically hyped fight of Ricardo Mayorga vs. Din Thomas. It was as if all those ‘Mayorga Qi energy’ conspiracy theories were created in vain.

Now tonight at the Battle of Americas in Nicaragua, Mayorga will finally make his MMA debut against a Canadian MMA fighter that’s 5-1, and is surprisingly fluent in Spanish. Check out the weigh-in of Ricardo Mayorga vs. Wesley Tiffer, a bout that Mayorga came in 20 lbs overweight for according to Mike Bohn. You can watch the entire event starting at 10:00 pm EST tonight on GoFightLive.
