Wanderlei Silva made a highly anticipated return to combat sports at 49, stepping into the ring at Spaten Fight Night 2 for an exhibition boxing match against two-time Brazilian boxing champion Acelino Freitas. The Pride legend’s comeback, however, quickly spiraled into controversy.
Silva was repeatedly warned for illegal actions, including headbutts, and was ultimately disqualified during the fight. The situation worsened when a post-fight brawl broke out, and Silva was knocked unconscious by Freitas’s son.

Michael Bisping reacts to the chaotic KO
Michael Bisping, who faced Silva at UFC 110, shared his thoughts on the incident in one clear statement.
“An MMA icon, an absolute legend of the game…Wanderlei Silva, was just knocked out. He was cheating, he was being a dirty fighter, he was head-butting left right, and center…then it all kicks off. Nasty, really is. … You can’t blame [Freitas’] people, or his crowd, for being p**d off. This is quite the fall from grace…Wanderlei Silva was someone that I was a huge fan of. These days, I’m not the biggest fan. I’ve always had a strong stance against people who take steroids. I did share the Octagon with Wanderlei Silva. … If you ask me, I was robbed on the judges’ scorecards. … I thought I won round one [and] round two. … I was robbed. In this boxing fight, he kind of got what he deserved. … We saw Wanderlei Silva head-butting his opponent. … It was nasty to see that at 49 years old.”
Bisping emphasizes that Silva’s repeated fouls contributed to the chaos and created the dangerous situation in the ring.
While Silva’s disqualification addressed his in-ring fouls, the knockout by Rafael Freitas occurred outside the competition rules. The melee escalated quickly, drawing criticism and concern for Silva’s safety. Fans and fighters alike debated whether Silva’s decision to continue competing at his age was wise.
Suspensions and legal action follow
Following the incident, Wanderlei Silva and Acelino Freitas received 180-day suspensions from the Brazilian National Boxing Council (CNB) due to their involvement in the fight and the brawl. Rafael Freitas, who delivered the knockout punch, was not directly sanctioned because he was not a licensed cornerman. However, CNB has recommended an indefinite ban for him from future boxing events.
Silva also revealed the severity of his injuries, including fractures to both orbital bones and a severely broken nose, and announced he plans to pursue legal action against Rafael Freitas, describing the attack as a criminal act.
“I had several work to do but I can’t because of my face,” Silva said. “I can’t sleep, I’m in a lot of pain, in such discomfort. That can’t stay like that. That was undoubtedly a criminal act, and every criminal act has to be judged by the justice. And I’m going after justice.”
The incident leaves Silva facing a difficult recovery and legal proceedings while also serving his suspension.
